Obituary

Albert Wayne Townsend, Sr., 72, of Charleston, West Virginia, passed away in his home on July 3, 2026.

Born in Charleston, West Virginia, on December 14, 1953, Albert attended Charleston High School in Charleston. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles (Aerie 519) for over 20 years and was a founding member of the FOE #519 Eagle Riders. Later in life, Albert became a devout Catholic, and his family takes comfort in knowing that he was welcomed into his Heavenly home.

Albert was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Albert and Edith Mae Townsend; his siblings: Ernest Townsend, Jr., Paul Townsend, Virginia (Townsend) Salser, Helen (Townsend) Gravely, Donald Townsend, Ronald Townsend, and Delbert Townsend, Sr.; his son, Albert Wayne Townsend, Jr., and his grandson, Maverick Stone, as well as several other close family relatives and friends.

He is survived by his brother, Carl Townsend. He is also survived by his children, April Pieper (James) of Frankfort, Kentucky, Virginia Mae “Jenny” Townsend-Hill (Rodney) of Nitro, West Virginia, and John Ward Eakin, III (Amber) of Dunbar, West Virginia; his friend and ex-wife, Theresa Eakin of Dunbar, West Virginia, and eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of whom loved him very much.

Albert’s compassion for animals is a legacy he passed to his children. From cats, to dogs, horses and even a raccoon or two, he provided excellent care for his pets. As he battled cancer and COPD in the last years of his life, he made certain his dog, Holly, would continue to have a loving home, even if he would no longer be able to provide it himself.

A Requiem Mass will take place at 6:00 p.m. on August 25, 2026, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Dunbar, West Virginia.
