Obituary

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Alice Zakaib Khoury on June 30, 2026. Alice was born on November 16, 1934, in Los Angeles, CA, the second-born child and oldest daughter of Paul and Haseeba Zakaib.

After returning to West Virginia in 1936, she lived the next 90 years of her life as a Charleston resident, graduating from Charleston High School, retiring from Stone and Thomas Department Store and most importantly, raising her children and grandchildren together with her husband of 48 years, Bashar Khoury, with endless love and dedication that will carry her legacy forward for years to come.

We will never be able to fully capture in words the love and loss we share for a woman whose entire life was founded on a selfless commitment to the support of others, nor will we be able to fully convey the positive impact of that commitment. Suffice it to say that we are all better off because of her.

Alice is survived by her son Richard (Barbara), daughter Laila, son Paul, grandchildren Richard (Jennifer), Robert, Brian, Chris, Sara (Leroy), Alex (Becca), Madie, Nilo, great-grandchildren Evan, Amir, Alya, Amal.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bashar Khoury; brother, Paul Zakaib Jr.; sisters, Wally Ann Bell, Pauline Vaughn, Catherine Ioannou, and Camelia Bhalla.

Alice was a lifetime member and faithful adherent of the Orthodox Christian Church at both Saint John and Saint George. She loved St. John Orthodox Church, 3512 MacCorkle Avenue SE, Charleston, WV 25304, and Saint Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Instead of flowers, please consider a donation to one of these entities or to Hospice Care, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. W, Charleston, WV 25387.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at at St. John Greek Orthodox Church, 3512 MacCorkle Avenue SE, Charleston, WV, with with Father Mark Elliott officiating.

Visitation will begin two hours prior at the church.

  3. Dwayne Rahal says:

We lost some good people and she was one of my favourites! We used to practice our Arabic together and she would wonder what language I was speaking.
It was also a bonus being between Alice, Janette with a dash of Vivian. These giants are sorely missed and they make us appreciate our reunions.

  4. my heart is with you all at this time…MsAlice will be missed im sure it’s a beautiful Day in heaven with mom &Dad

  5. I spent a lot of time growing up with the Zakaib family. I remember Mrs. Zakaib always trying to teach Alice how to make all those Syrian foods and bread I loved to eat. Lots of good memories. I just loved Alice as did everyone that ever knew her-She lived a wonderful life surrounded by the people she loved. She will be missed.
