Obituary

Ann Mohler Maddox, 76, passed away January 17, 2026. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Michael Maddox.

Ann was a wonderful person with a heart of gold. She overcame several health issues by her refusal to give into them. A fall when young resulted in a severe concussion which, it is felt, contributed to her suffering from bipolar disorder. After finally finding the proper medicine, she recovered completely. Ann was a friend of Bill with a 44-year chip. She was so proud of that and worked so hard to earn it. Ann never gave up. She was so courageous and inspiring to others. Sadly, a broken hip and the onset of dementia was too much for even her wonderful spirit to overcome. The world is an empty place now to those of us who loved Ann. But each of us still have our precious memories of her and the joy she always brought with her wherever she went.

Also surviving are her sister, Judy Stocks; brothers, David Mohler, Billy Mohler; cousin, Suzanne Thorniley, and many nieces and nephews.

Ann was preceded by her father, William E. Mohler, and mother, Mary Ann Mohler; and sister, Barbara Mohler Shepherd.

Ann burned her retinas many years ago during a visit to her sister in Las Vegas. Her little blind spots made it harder for her to read but she loved Mike reading to her almost every night for years. They would pick out a favorite book and sometimes read it over and over.

Also, she loved hiking in the woods of West Virginia and together they hiked almost every state park many times.

She was a member of the first graduating class of George Washington High School, graduated from Golf Park Junior College in Mississippi and attended West Virginia University where she and Mike met. Ann had a children’s class at First Presbyterian Church of Charleston, worked for many years as a tour guide in the state capitol and secretary for the Governor Arch Moore. She received an award for meritorious service and appointed as a Distinguished West Virginian. She was awarded this honor in 1988 and it has hung on the wall ever since. She was so proud of this and rightfully so.

Ann, you were such a bright candle and you will be forever in our hearts.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 23, 2026, at First Presbyterian Church Chapel, Charleston. Interment will be at Montgomery Memorial Gardens, London, WV.

Visitation will begin 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.
