Obituary

Barbara A. Smith, 93, of Charleston, WV, went home to be with her Lord and savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday October 14, 2024.

Mom was born in Roanoke, VA, on August 8, 1931. She was the child of Blair McCormick Amole and Ella Louise Spenser. Mom attended Collegiate School in Richmond, VA, through her junior year, moving to Charleston and graduating from Charleston High School her senior year in 1948. She went to West Virginia University her freshman year and left after that to marry the love of her life, Bill Smith, on November 25, 1950.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Bill Smith, and her brother, Blair “Mac” Amole.

Mom is survived by her daughters, Kathryn Fowler of Louisville, KY, and Terry (Ron) Potesta of Charleston, and her son, Monty (Pam) Smith of Charleston. Mom has eight grandchildren, Peter (Abby) Potesta, Blair (Lee) Lewis, Kathryn (Jordan) Pinto, William Potesta, Creed (Whitney) Fowler, Erica (Ed) Grazziani, Bryant Taylor and Lyndsay Taylor, and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mom and Dad had a long and fruitful marriage with strong Christian beliefs. They were instrumental in the development of the Fellowship of Christion Athletes in West Virginia.

For the last four years, Mom lived at Harmony Southridge and was a charter member.

Mom was greatly loved by her family and friends and will be missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to know her.

Memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Lee Street and Beauregard in downtown Charleston. Rev. Tim Hudson will officiate. A reception with the family will immediately follow at the church.
