Obituary

Barbara Abshire Buchanan, 87, of Charleston, WV, passed away on October 10, 2023, at her home surrounded by her children.

She was born in London, England, to the late Maurice and Jenny Sherman.

It was there that she met her first husband, Harold Abshire. Harold was in the Korean War and stationed in London, England. At the age of 17, she followed her husband to West Virginia where she raised her five children. She became a Teacher’s Aide and taught kindergarten at Watts School until she retired.

Barbara met her second husband, Charles “Chuck” Buchanan, and he would make her happy for the next 28 years. After converting to Judaism, Chuck became a member of B’nai Jacob Synagogue, where Barbara had been a member for many years. She was active in the Synagogue and a member of B’nai Jacob Ladies Auxiliary.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles (Chuck) Buchanan; her sons, Steven and Craig Abshire; brothers, Stanley, Leslie and Leonard Sherman, and granddaughter, Rhiannon.

Barbara is survived by her sons, Larry Abshire (Donna), Jerry Abshire (Cindy), and daughter, Sandy Brogan (Walter); grandchildren, Jessica Perkins (Kristopher), Michael Pugliese, Joseph Abshire, Kristen and Melissa Abshire, Tiffany Abshire and Nicole Ikewood; great-grandchildren, Julian and Jadon Cruz, Avery Pugliese, Kiersten Abshire, Abbie, Delacy and Steven, and two great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association, 1248 Greenbrier Street, Charleston, WV 25311 or American Diabetes Association, in loving memory of Barbara Buchanan.

  1. I am so thankfilul I knew your mom. We met at the private pool and I would sub at Watts. I’d taught at Watts prior. Barbara came to Robins where I taught. It was a joy to be around her! I’m thankful she met and marrued Chuck. Sending sympathy and love to you her children and grandchildren. Godspeed.

  2. My Aunt Barbara was a force of nature. I loved her so much. She taught me so many things about being a young lady. She was so beautiful and so fierce, when protecting and loving her children. She had such a kind and tender heart, and she always said how much she enjoyed dancing the night away with her Chuck. I will miss her so much.

  3. The West Virginia and Kanawha County Associations of Retired School Employees extend their sincere sympathy to you, the family, in your sorrow. Blessings to all.
