Obituary
Barbara Cox Mason, 92, of Charleston, West Virginia, passed away Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Arthur B. Hodges.
Barbara was born in Hardy, KY, the daughter of physician Lloyd E. Cox and Glada Conley Cox, in 1931. She grew up with her sisters, Anne and Phyllis, on Lewis Street in Charleston, and as a teen joined chorus for the Charleston Light Opera Guild.
After graduating from Charleston High School in 1948, she studied for two years in Bristol, Virginia, at Sullins College before attending West Virginia University where she enjoyed membership in the Pi Bet Phi fraternity for women and earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in education with a teaching certificate.
In 1958, she married James Rei Mason, noted Charleston engineer, businessman and city councilman.
Preceded in death by her husband, in 1982, Barbara resided in Loudon Heights until moving to Edgewood Summit in 2015.
Barbara is survived by her children, James L. Mason (Gail), Martha Mason, and Carol Mason (Rachel).
Barbara coordinated volunteers for Meals on Wheels, played tennis as a member of Edgewood County Club, served on the altar guild of St. Matthews Episcopal Church, presided as president of the Loudon Heights Garden Club and supported the Charleston symphony. She excelled at crossword puzzles and other games and will be remembered for her quick wit.
Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 36 Norwood Road, Charleston, West Virginia, with the Very Rev. Alan Kim Webster officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, Charleston, West Virginia.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home, 1118 Virginia Street East, Charleston, West Virginia.
