Obituary

Barbara Jean Abner, 87, of St. Albans, WV, passed away into the arms of Jesus on November 14, 2024, peacefully surrounded by her family.

She was born June 2, 1937, to the late Alva Hackney and Cressel Duty.

Barbara worked for the Union Mission and the Hilltop Home for the Elderly, caring and cooking for many. She ended her career working for a gas company and became a homemaker to care for many children and family.

She was a special person to all, always greeting people with a smile. To know her was to love her. She cherished her life as the “preacher’s wife”, and loved Jesus and her church with her whole heart.

Barbara is survived by her daughters Charline Raffle and Robin Baire, and sons Ervin Harper, JC Abner, and Nathan Abner. She had 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren, with 2 on the way.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Christine Abner, husband, Dr. James C. Abner, brothers Acy Hackney, Darrell Hackney, Chuck Thaxton, sister, Juanita Hackney, mother, Cressel Duty, and father, Alva Hackney.

The funeral service for Barbara will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home in Charleston, WV. Burial will immediately follow at Grandview Memorial Park in Dunbar, WV.

Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

    My special friend for 74 years. we sang together at our churches we attended. I loved her so much. we never lost touch in our 74 years of friendship. In my heart always.
