Obituary

Benjamin Reid Homan, formerly of Charleston, West Virginia, was born on April 6, 1990, to Dr. Thomas R. Homan and Sandra S. Mariani. He passed away on September 17, 2025, at home in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. Ben was a graduate of George Washington High School and Shepherd University, and a member of Christ Church United Methodist in Charleston, West Virginia.

Ben was preceded in death by his grandparents, Marion and Betty Spelock; Dr. Walter B. Homan; Mary Lou Thomas; and Rose Mariani. He is survived by his parents, Dr. Thomas R. Homan and Sandra S. Mariani (Kenneth); his sister, Leah M. Homan (Cameron Mullikin); stepsister, Courtney L. Mariani; stepbrother, Nicholas G. Mariani (Kelsi); and grandfather, Guido Mariani. He is also survived by his uncles and aunts, Kyle Homan (Susan), Dale Homan (Karen), Andrew Homan (Gretchen), Tamra Albu, and Jenni Fenton, as well as many cousins, a niece and nephew, and his beloved dog, Duke.

Ben had a spirit of kindness, love, and compassion. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing on his family farms. He loved the state of West Virginia, the mountains, and appreciated the people and beauty of it. He had a deep love for his family, especially his sister. Although he is no longer with us here on earth, let us carry his spirit of acceptance and empathy through our daily lives.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 26, 2025, at Christ Church United Methodist in Charleston, West Virginia, with Dr. Randall Flanagan officiating. A visitation, reception will follow the service. A private family burial will be held in Sugar Grove, West Virginia, on Saturday, September 27, 2025.

  2. I am so sorry for your loss. I will always remember Ben for his wonderful sense of humor and warmth. He was a friend, and teammate and I am truly blessed to have known him and to have been able to call him not only a friend but a brother. I had just talked with a couple weeks ago and I just can’t comprehend this right now I am devastated. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Ben will be missed dearly!

    My memories of Ben are from the lazy summer days at OKI…he was such a joy to hang out with on the beach. But what I loved about him the most was his gentle spirit and his kindness towards others. Even as a young teen, he watched out for my daughter in many ways. Like Leah said, I agree he was a Golden Boy 💔
