Obituary
Bernice Joan Treadway, 81, of Rand, West Virginia, passed away on June 2, 2026, at Hubbard Hospice House, surrounded by her loving family, after a brief but brave battle with cancer. She was born on October 16, 1944, in Richwood, West Virginia, to the late Della Eads.
In addition to her mother, Bernice was preceded in death by her beloved son, Gary Dean Treadway; her brother, Thomas Smith; and her infant sister, Bonnie June.
Bernice is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, James Edward Treadway; her daughter, June Falcon and her husband Pablo of Rand; her grandchildren, Dr. Chris Treadway and his wife Teresa of Charleston, Danielle Collins of Rand, Michelle Ferrell of Charleston, Tara Bays and her husband Jason of Luling, Louisiana, Joseph Falcon of Cross Lanes, Rebecca Falcon of Chicago, Illinois, and Hector Falcon of Ona; her greatgrandchildren, Nicholas Collins, Noah Collins, Heather Brown, Sophie Brown, Ava Brown, Avery Bays, and Aidan Bays; and her sisters, Margaret Jackson and her husband Jay of Montgomery, and Lorine Rhodes and her husband Steve of Oak Hill.
Throughout her life, Bernice had a gift for sewing. She worked several jobs over the years, but among her favorites were as a seamstress at the Diamond Department Store in Charleston and as an associate at the Piece Goods Shop in Kanawha City, where she made two lifelong friends, Kate Vogel and Karen Briggs. She also spent time as a caseworker for Shawnee Hills and school bus aide for Kanawha County Schools.
Bernice loved country music and, in her younger days, could often be found line dancing at the Charleston Moose Lodge. By all accounts, she could do a mean “Boot Scootin’ Boogie.”
More than anything, Bernice loved spending time with her family. No matter where any of her children or grandchildren ended up, they always knew they would find a warm meal and a comfortable place to sleep on Raven Drive.
Bernice’s family will celebrate her life in a private service. Interment will take place at Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery in honor of her husband’s military service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation in Bernice’s honor to Hubbard Hospice House.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www.barlowbonsall.com.
Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home in Charleston is supporting the family during this difficult time.
