Obituary

Betty Bird Stacy, 97, was born on March 1, 1928, in St. Albans, WV, and passed away April 20, 2025.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Preston and Wilma (Sowards) Bird; brother, Calvin Bird, and her husband of 52 years, George P. Stacy II.

Betty is survived by four children, George “Palmer” Stacy III of Lewisburg, WV, Lynn Stacy Shaffer of Yawkey, WV, S. Preston Stacy (Sarah) of Alderson, WV, and Jane Ellen Stacy (Richard Kemplin) of Kenna, WV; five grandchildren, Jennifer Lea Chapman (Michael Chapman) of Huntington, WV, Andrew Lewis Stacy of Raleigh, NC, Margaret “Meg” Hull Stacy (Matt McCallum) of Mooresville, NC, Christopher Lewis Stacy of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Scott Hubbard Stacy of Lewisburg; two great-grandchildren, Shannon Pellegrini and Madeline Stacy Chapman.

Following graduation from Saint Albans High School and business college, Betty began working as a secretary at Lewis Hubbard Corporation, a wholesale grocer in Charleston, where she met and married her husband, George. They later owned and operated a local grocery store, South Hills Market, on Bridge Road, for many years. She retired from the State Office of Economic Development Authority.

She loved her family, her home, and her flower gardens and was a wonderful mother and grandmother – never forgetting any family birthdays.

She was an excellent cook and loved baking, especially pound cakes, which she loved to give to friends and neighbors, as well as having at family dinners at each holiday until the last few years.

She had already made plans for this season’s flower beds at the age of 97 and will be looking down from Heaven to see them.

She will be sadly missed by all her friends, family and neighbors, but also lovingly remembered by us all.

A special thank you to Sharon Carroll, who helped care for Mom over the past year with loving compassion, and also Betsy Peterson, friend and neighbor, for her help and kindness over the years, as well as Marty Taylor, Andrea and Christi, other special people in Mom’s life. Also, a special thank you to all the wonderful staff at Hubbard Hospice House for their compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. W., Charleston, WV 25387.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

  1. Julie says:

My family, the Gilbert’s, live across the street from the Stacy’s on Bedford Rd. Mrs. Stacy was a dream-come-true surrogate mom to the entire neighborhood gang. Hide and Seek and Kick -the-Can were often stopped to enjoy warm cookies brought out to us by this kind, lovely lady. Mrs. Stacy welcomed everyone into her home and her backyard full of flowers offered up a safe, beautiful space to play. I know, even though she lived a long life full of kids, grandkids and great grandkids, her absence will be felt by many. Love to all the Stacy’s, Julie Gilbert Wood

  2. I am Betty’s first cousin, Linda Fitzwater ( Sowards). The last time I saw her, my aunt, Wilma ( Betty’s mom) was in Hospice care. . Betty truly loved her momma. We found out that day that we had something in common. We never forgot a family members’ birthday. She was so proud of her mom’s quilting. I wish we could’ve stayed in touch! I
