Obituary

Bruce Bernard Harding, 76, of Charleston WV, unexpectedly passed away October 13, 2025, in Charleston.

He was born on January 7, 1949, in Milwaukee, WI, to Edmund and Vyvyan (McKanna) Harding. Bruce graduated from Juneau High School in Milwaukee, where he lettered on the football and track teams, and was a member of the Chess Club. Following graduation, he attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Bruce was an insurance claims adjuster with over 40 years of experience, most of which he spent with CNA Insurance.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Jayne Bochat, and his American Toy Spaniel, Sadie.

Bruce is survived by his sons, John Harding of New Hampshire and Michael Harding of Washington, D.C.; his brother, Greg Harding of Wisconsin; grandchildren, Olivia Harding and Nathaniel Harding of New Hampshire; his significant other, Judy Thayer of Charleston, and their two beloved Japanese Chins, Atticus and Argus.

In his younger years, Bruce enjoyed camping and fishing with his sons and teaching them to be worthy opponents in the game of chess. Later in life, he became an avid golf fan, both on the course and on television. Bruce was always a sociable person and could often be found at a local watering hole with a martini in his hand and a smile on his face. He was loved by all and especially enjoyed spending time with the ladies. At home, he enjoyed watching game shows, sports and westerns on television. He also had a beautiful collection of German beer steins.

A memorial service will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home, 1118 Virginia Street East, Charleston, WV.

  1. Bruce clearly lived life with a great sense of fun, connection, and adventure. From teaching his sons how to fish, camp, and think strategically over a chessboard, to his love of golf, good company, and a well-made martini — he seemed to have mastered the art of enjoying the simple, good things in life. Wishing the Lord’s peace and comfort to your family as you celebrate a life so full of stories, laughter, and love.
