Obituary
Charles Guthrie Moyers, Jr., Ph.D., passed away on February 5, 2026. He was born to Charles Guthrie and Margaret (Cochran) Moyers on March 9, 1934, along with his twin sister, Virginia, in Pittsburgh, PA.
When he was four-years-old, the family moved to Connellsville, PA, where he and his sister had an idyllic childhood playing in the nearby woods and participating in the activities of their local schools. Following family tradition, Chuck matriculated to Virginia Tech and obtained a B.S. degree in chemical engineering. While at Tech, he played varsity tennis, served as the sports editor for the school’s newspaper, and was a member of the Cadet Corps. Upon graduation, he served two years of active military duty in the United States Army. He would later spend four years in the Reserves. Completing his military duty, Chuck became employed by Union Carbide in the Charleston area. While at Carbide, he obtained an M.S. in chemical engineering from West Virginia University. Not content with ending his education, he went on to the University of Delaware and received a Ph.D. His doctoral dissertation was patented, and he participated in several more patents for Union Carbide. Chuck enjoyed being a student, but he also proved to be an excellent teacher. For many years, he taught continuing professional education courses arranged at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers’ national conferences. He also was an adjunct professor for WVU’s Graduate Engineering Program. He took pleasure in imparting his knowledge to others. Upon retirement from Union Carbide, Chuck formed a consulting firm. Later, he joined MATRIC (now AVN).
The grandson of a small-town newspaper editor, Chuck valued the written word. He was a frequent contributor to and editor for chemical engineering publications, and he also served as sectional author and editor for Perry’s Chemical Engineers’ Handbook.
Athletics played an important role in his life; he liked the competitiveness of sports. He began playing tennis at a young age and continued the sport until a few years before his death, accumulating some trophies in the process. He also enjoyed running and was a frequent competitor in marathons. This culminated in his running the Boston Marathon. Chuck took up golf in his retirement years, but he always was a bit frustrated with the sport.
Although a scientist by education and occupation, Chuck took great pleasure in the arts. He loved classical music, especially the music played by the WV Symphony and the beautiful music of his home church, First Presbyterian. He and Pat took advantage of visiting many of the art museums of the United States and Europe when they traveled. Chuck was a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, a member of First Presbyterian Church of Charleston, and a member of Berry Hills Country Club. Chuck was always a loving and supportive husband and father.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia, and their daughter, Megan, son-in-law, Patrick Corbett, and their children, Madeline and Jackson.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on February 21, 2026, at First Presbyterian Church of Charleston. A reception will be held following the service.
Visitation wil begin one hour prior at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Capital Campaign of Craik-Patton, Inc., 2809 Kanawha Blvd., E., Charleston, WV 25311 or to the WV Symphony, PO Box 2292, Charleston, WV 25328.
