Obituary
Charles “jack” edward martin, age 81, of charleston, died on april 5, 2019, in charleston.
He was preceded in death by his parents, calvin martin and delcie moore; his daughter, carolyn martin johnson; and brother, john martin.
Surviving him are his wife of 54 years, sandra jean carte martin; daughter, tammy martin nearman (husband henry nearman) of charleston; granddaughter, megan nearman of charleston; grandsons, terry johnson and nathan johnson (kathryn johnson) of charleston; great – grandsons, josiah and shaun bradsher; great – granddaughters, elliana and autumn johnson; sisters, irene “tootsie” williams (john) of florida, janet comuzie of meadowcreek, donna chapman (steve) of princeton; brothers, larry martin (cookie martin) of florida, gene martin (linda) of elkview; many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews; and his beloved cat, river dude.
Jack was born november 8, 1937, in charleston, w.Va. He graduated from charleston high with the class of 1956.
He worked as a master carpenter for brown and root and was a member of carpenters local 1207. Throughout his career, he helped build many of the interstate bridges around the charleston area.
He also was a mechanic for studebaker and ford. He enjoyed fixing cars, making repairs to anything, was a member of the civil defense, and raced his 1963 triumph in the charleston motorcycle club.
He was board member at meadowbrook baptist, which he helped build in his teen years.
He had a passion for teaching his family life skills. He was widely known for his quick wit, infectious smile, and compassionate spirit.
Funeral service will be 1 p.M. Tuesday, april 9, at barlow bonsall funeral home, charleston, with rabbi victor urecki officiating. Burial will follow at elk hills memorial gardens, big chimney. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the american heart association.
