Obituary

Charles E. “Sonny” Jones, 77, of Charleston, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 24, 2026, at Kanawha Place in Charleston. He was born on January 26, 1949 in Welch, West Virginia, and lived most of his life in Charleston WV.

Sonny was the beloved son of Frances Mary Vamprine Jones and Charles Mason Jones. He graduated from Cedar Grove High School and attended Alderson-Broaddus University. He retired as an Adult Service Program Specialist from the Department of Health and Human Resources for the State of WV.

Sonny was a devoted Christian who found great joy in helping others, never hesitant to lend a helping hand at a moment’s notice and expecting nothing in return. He was a loyal and dedicated friend to all who had the privilege of knowing him. He touched the lives of many people and was deeply appreciative and grateful for the friendships he formed throughout his life. His kindness, generosity, and genuine friendship will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.

Sonny was a life-long American Baptist. He was baptized at the Cedar Grove Baptist Church where his spiritual journey began. He was very active at Asbury United Methodist Church where he served as a Trustee. Following the merger of Asbury with St. Mark’s Methodist Church, Sonny continued his worship and fellowship carrying with him the same faith, commitment and love for his church family.

Sonny is survived by cousins Edward Vamprine of Abita, LA and Cynthia V. Hymel of Mandeville, LA; his dear friend, Jamie Smith whom Sonny mentored, encouraged and considered family; good friends Russ Harvey and Tim Basford (Jeanne); the family members of Kenneth and Mary Alice Agee; lifetime friends Rev. Thomas G. Bayes, Jr. (Dianne) and Amy Fizer; and caring neighbors Kay Dow and Julie Clifton.

  1. I’ve known Sonny since I was a child. I knew his parents. My mom, my brother and I visited them quite often when they lived in Cedar Grove. I’m sorry to see Sonny pass away. RIP Sonny. Fly High. You are now with your parents. I know your mother welcomed you with her arms wide open.
