Obituary

Coy Lee Hughes of Charleston, WV, passed away on June 22, 2023, after a long battle with dementia. He was 90 years old and died on his and Alma’s 67th year anniversary.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Minnie Hughes; three brothers, Paul, Barney, and Claude “Zeke,” and one sister, Mossie Swain.

Coy is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Alma Lee; two daughters, Kim (Ed) Hayne of Charleston and Lisa (Danny) Ellars of Charleston; five grandchildren, Micah (Bethany) Ellars of Nashville, TN, Megan (Devin) Fields of St Albans, WV, Laura (Josh) Abbott of Green Bank, WV, Miranda Cox of Richmond, VA, and Jamie (Josh) Dalton of Charleston, and four great-grandchildren with one more on the way! Sarah, Samuel, and James Abbott, and Sorin Fields. Coy and Alma also had two precious little girls they loved dearly, Nalaa and Averi of Naples FL, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Coy was born in a small mining community in Stearns, KY, but grew up in Cabin Creek, WV. He served in the U.S. Army as a Medic in the Korean War, and was stationed in Salzburg, Austria.

Coy was always active in sports. Everything from table tennis, where he was state champion for many years, to softball, shooting pool, basketball, horseshoes you name it, he was always up for the challenge! Ask anyone, and they will tell you he was a real comedian! He had an amazing memory and could tell you jokes one right after another! He was always the life of every get together.

Coy and his family had a lifelong love for their favorite vacation place, Cherry Grove, SC. He was an active member of South Ruffner Presbyterian Church, where he was an Elder, Sunday School teacher, and also sang in the choir. He loved his Lord and Savior.

We would like to give a special thank you to all the amazing staff at Hospice House for their love and support to our family! Especially Jo Bailey, Jennifer Kirsch, and Shelby Clawson.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation in Coy’s name to Hospice Care of Kanawha County, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. W., Charleston, WV 25387.
