Obituary

David Paul Gillispie, 84, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2026. He was born on July 23, 1941.

David was preceded in death by his father, Millard Gillispie; his mother, Nellie Gillispie; and his brother, Charles Gillispie.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Judy Gillispie; his son, Jim Gillispie (LaRita); and his daughter, Kim Hughes. He was a proud grandfather to Lewis Gillispie (Briayna), Grace Cravens (Brian), Evan Hughes, and Mason Hughes. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Carol Gillispie, wife of the late Charles Gillispie, along with beloved niece, nephews, and extended family members.

David dedicated more than 48 years of his life to education, serving as a junior high school principal in Kanawha County. He was otherwise known as “the godfather” by his colleagues and fellow principals respected by students, colleagues, and his community for his leadership, integrity, and commitment to helping young people succeed. In addition to his work in education, he served as the director of the West Virginia High School Boys and Girls Basketball Championships, where he played an important role in supporting and promoting student athletics throughout the state. He worked with WV Secondary School Commission. He also spent many years as a high school basketball referee, earning the respect of coaches, players, and fellow officials through his professionalism, and love of the game.

A gifted athlete, David earned All-State honors in high school and became one of West Virginia’s most accomplished athletes. He was inducted into his high school, college, and the State of West Virginia Halls of Fame for his achievements in basketball, baseball, and golf. His remarkable accomplishments left a lasting legacy and inspired generations of athletes. He was widely admired for both his talent and sportsmanship. David held the course record at three golf courses in the state of West Virginia and received several “hole-in- one” victories.

Following retirement, David found his greatest joy in spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. An avid golfer throughout his life, he enjoyed countless hours on the golf course with friends and family. He was also deeply committed to his faith, remaining active in his church and dedicating much of his time to charitable work and serving others. Whether enjoying a round of golf, participating in church activities, helping those in need, officiating basketball games, or gathering with loved ones, David cherished every opportunity to invest in the people around him.

David will be remembered for his unwavering faith, devotion to family, distinguished career in education, extraordinary athletic accomplishments, leadership in West Virginia athletics, and servant’s heart. Through his leadership as an educator, his achievements as an athlete, his years of service as a basketball official, his commitment to his church, and his generosity toward others, he touched countless lives. His legacy of faith, kindness, humility, and service will continue to inspire all who knew him.

The family will forever treasure the memories they shared with him and find comfort in knowing that his influence, love, and example will continue to guide future generations.

Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at St Timothy’s Lutheran Church, 900 Lawndale Lane, Charleston, WV, with Elder Jeff Northcutt officiating.

Friends may pay respects beginning one hour prior at the church.
