Obituary
Donald Eugene Sterling, 86, of Charleston, WV, passed away on July 12, 2025, at CAMC General Hospital.
He was born May 30, 1939, in Rootville, PA, the son of Blanche M. Vanik.
He was a graduate of Corry Area High School, Class of 1958. Mr. Sterling was a 1966 graduate of Penn State University with an Associate degree in Drafting and Design Technology. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from WV Institute of Technology and a Master of Science degree in Engineering with a minor in Engineering Management from WV College of Graduate Studies. He was a lifetime member of the Penn State Alumni Association. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and served in various offices at the Branch and Section levels.
He fulfilled his military obligation with service in the Pennsylvania (Army) National Guard and the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the American Legion.
He was a member of the American Orchid Society.
He was United Methodist in faith.
He had 34 years’ service at the Structures Division of the WV Department of Transportation, where he worked as a project review engineer with the consultant review section. He had oversight of the timber bridge program. After retirement, he worked for various consulting engineering companies.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his sister, Christine Green.
Mr. Sterling is survived by his wife, of 42 years, Janet; his sisters, Doris Bergman of Spring Hill, FL, and Helen Bogdanowicz of Coeur d’Alene, ID; nephews: Michael Bogdanowicz of Kelso, WA, Erik Bogdanowicz of Coeur d’Alene, ID, Lynn Berman II of Spring Hill, FL, and Stephen Wotring of Stigler, OK; nieces: Tina Cameron of New Zealand, Allyson Martin of Middleton, PA, Dawn Begin of Spring Hill, FL, and Terri Gill of Ormond Beach, FL, and several great nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home, 1118 Virginia Street East, Charleston, WV, with Pastor Gene Brooks officiating. Immediately following, Mr. Sterling will be laid to rest with military honors at Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery, Dunbar, WV.
Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
