Obituary
eileen k. Pettigrew (born eileen teresa kirwin on september 10, 1919), died at the age of 98 in columbus, oh on january 18, 2018. Until moving to ohio a few years ago, she had been a life-long resident of charleston, wv, and member of sacred heart basilica.
Eileen was the youngest of 5 children born to thomas and ida kirwin of charleston. She graduated valedictorian from sacred heart high school (now charleston catholic high school) in 1937 and obtained her business degree from charleston business college in 1939.
After a few years with west virginia social services, she transferred to union carbide technical center. During world war ii, eileen volunteered with the uso visiting wounded soldiers, including traveling by train to the military hospital at the greenbrier in white sulphur springs. Eileen was a member and officer of numerous organizations over the years, including beta sigma phi sorority, the charleston symphony women’s auxiliary, sacred heart church guild, st. Agnes church guild and st. Agnes garden club. In 1948, she was voted the beta sigma phi sweetheart.
In 1950, eileen married local attorney, bernard joseph pettigrew, jr. They had 4 children “ kathleen teresa pettigrew, 65, joseph kirwin pettigrew, 60, james harwood pettigrew, 58, and anne marie pettigrew, 57. After a few years’ break to raise their children, eileen returned to the workforce full-time as a legal secretary for her husband. The two of them worked together until his death in 2000. In addition to her above-mentioned children, eileen is also survived by 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
There will be a viewing at barlow-bonsall funeral home, 1118 virginia street e, charleston, wv, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm on friday, january 26. The funeral mass will be held at sacred heart basilica on saturday, january 27, at 9:30 am, with the burial following mass at sunset memorial gardens, so. Charleston, wv.
