Obituary
Ellen ann cooney died november 15, 2016 of natural causes at the distinguished age of 99. She lived a full wonderful life filled with family, friends and her love of west virginia.
Ellen ann was born in clarksburg the daughter of virginia rogers white and goodridge e. White, the first of their four daughters and one son. She was educated in webster springs schools and a 1936 graduate of west virginia university where she was a member of kappa kappa gamma sorority and was active in student government, being elected as vice-president of the student body.
Ellen ann was an educator who taught at webster springs high school and later at glen burnie (md) high school. She was an active member of the first presbyterian church in south charleston, wv and later at st. Matthews episcopal church in charleston, wv. Ellen ann served her community in many ways and was a volunteer at women’s and children’s camc in charleston.
Ellen ann had many friends and was the matriarch of her extended family after the passing of her parents. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, william l. Cooney in 1988. Her sister jeanne ellen hamrick of san jose, ca, and her sister betty lee heatherman of huntington, wv. She is survived by her sister elizabeth hope wright of morgantown, wv and her brother goodridge e. White jr. Of webster springs, wv. Ellen ann had three children, col.(ret.) john michael herold of kent island, md,, sara anne cooney of charleston, wv and jeanne ellen spicer of columbus, oh. As well as many nieces and nephews, ellen ann had six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm, saturday the 10th of december at st. John’s episcopal church in charleston officiated by rev. Marquita hutchins, rector.
