Obituary

Ellen Malone Freer, 95, passed away on June 13, 2026.

Born August 30, 1930, in Louisville, KY, she was the youngest of three children. She graduated from Andrews Academy and Stephens College. In 1954, Ellen married E. Richard Freer and they were married for 69 years. Ellen was a 50-year member of PEO, Daughters of the American Revolution and was active with Girl Scouts. Ellen and Richard moved multiple times, however Charleston was their final home. Ellen was involved in several local organizations and charities.

Some of Ellen’s favorite lifetime memories were traveling with their friends and their friendships.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents, Claytus and Stuart Malone; sister, Mary Gardner, and brother, Stuart Malone.

Survivors include her son, Richard L. Freer; daughter, Patricia E. Krattenmaker (Bruce Krattenmaker); grandchildren, David Freer (Jackie), Anne Hakim (Jeiccy), Matthew Krattenmaker (Kelsey), and Katherine Krattenmaker (Faris Barudi), along with several great-grandchildren, Hallie, Ellen and Graham Freer, Sarah and Emily Hakim, and Lillian and Elias Barudi.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on August 1, 2026, at Christ Church United Methodist, 1221 Quarrier Street, Charleston, WV, to be followed by a celebration of life at Edgewood Summit. Burial will be at St. Remy Cemetery in New York.

Visitation will begin 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Christ Church United Methodist or the Salvation Army in Charleston, WV.
