Obituary
Emily ann hess-swarts marks, 98, of charleston, passed away on sunday, may 27, 2018 at the lighthouse assisted living, centennial, co.
Emily ann was born on september 23, 1919 in charleston to the late bernhardt and stella hess swarts.
She was an executive secretary for the west virginia board of education with 20 years of service and a member of both temple israel and b’nai jacob synagogue in charleston, serving a while as secretary.
Emily ann was a graduate of charleston high school, where she met her future husband of 68 years, the late sidney j. Marks, who was at the time, president of the student body and an all state football and basketball player.
She also later attended secretary school in charleston.
Emily ann was extremely active in local charities including the sisterhood of both; temple israel and b’nai jacob synagogue, as well as, hadassah.
In later years, she enjoyed working on the reunion committee for charleston high school.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, david swarts.
She is survived by her daughter, sandra lee marks of new york, ny; son, bruce stanley “bob” (lilly) marks of denver, co; brother-in-law, harmon marks of texas; 2 granddaughters, lara and deborah of denver, co; and 3 great-grandsons residing in colorado.
Funeral service will be 1:00 p.M. Thursday, may 31, 2018 at barlow bonsall funeral home, charleston with rabbi james d. Cohn and rabbi victor urecki officiating. Burial will follow at b’nai israel cemetery, charleston.

My Condolences On The Passing Of Emily Ann. She Was One Of My Mother’S Best Friends, And Was The Last Person (With Florence Sheff) To Visit My Mother Hours Before She Passed Away. I Have Some Family Photos On Display In My Living Room, And Among My Favorites Is One Of Emily Ann, Charlotte Braun, My Mother Gertrude And Another Young Woman (Maybe Alma Brown) All Dressed Up In Their Coats And Hats, With Corsages Pinned To Their Coats – So Perhaps It Was At High School Graduation. I Am Saddened To Learn Of Emily’S Passing, But I Have Many Fond Memories. May Your Memories Give You Comfort In This Time Of Mourning.
