Obituary

Eugene Ray “Coach Mean Gene” Cossin, age 87, of Charleston, WV, passed away on April 8, 2024. He was born on April 30, 1937, to the late Tennison and Devona Cossin.

He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy.

Gene loved football; he was a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Browns. He enjoyed making predictions for the NFL mock draft and college football. He coached football, baseball and basketball for many years in the community at North Charleston Doc’s Generals, Bigley Avenue and Tiskelwah Elementary. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Gene is survived by wife Margaret “Marg” Cossin; son Christopher Cossin and daughters Terri Brewer (Robert) and Ginger Taylor (Al), grandchildren Michael Knight (Jen), Sheldon Freshour, Jeffery Cossin (Natasha), Katelyn McCormick (Jeremy), Christopher Knight and Tyler Brewer (Lindsay); great-grandchildren Kilee, Nathan and Aubrey Knight, Damon and Adrian Freshour, E. Michael McCormick and Levi Brewer, along with his brother Timothy “Tuck” Cossin and sister Nancy Dawson.

He was preceded in death by children Eugene Ray Cossin Jr., Jeffery Cossin and Pete Cossin and siblings Arlen, Gary, Michael, Bobby, Sandra and Marilyn.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dale Cane for always been there when needed.

A short memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 15, 2024, Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery in Dunbar, WV.
