Obituary

Francis gilbert “frank” hosimer, 93, died friday, february 9, 2018 at the arthur b. Hodges center, charleston.

Frank was born in south bend, indiana on october 30, 1924, but went to kindergarten through high school in chicago, ill.

He was predeceased by his parents, frank c. Hosimer and edith mildred dreblow; and an infant son, frederick.

He began his college at purdue university in indiana for chemical engineering in the fall of 1942, but he was called to duty in the u.S. Air force reserve in april 1943 during wwii. He became the first pilot of a b-24 bomber, completed 35 missions over germany, austria, romania, france and northern italy in the 15th air force based in italy, returned from that duty in november 1944, to the u.S. And was released at the end of the war in august 1945. He then resumed his college studies at purdue university and graduated in 1948 with a b.S. Degree in chemical engineering.

He completed 34 ½ years of service as a chemical engineer at union carbide, mostly serving at the south charleston plant, with about 3 years at the tech center.

He was a member of first presbyterian church, charleston for about 25 years, then attended the unitarian universalist congregation for about 30 years. However, frank’s “real” church was in social groups: inner dimensions, spiritual frontiers, life spectrums and the southeast spiritual conference.

He sang in the carbide chorus for 29 years and in the kanawha kordsmen barbershop chorus for 17 years.

His 2 ½ years in the u.S. Air force and 34 ½ years in chemical production were significant parts of his life. About his service in wwii as a bomber pilot at age 19, frank was especially proud of being interviewed for a charleston gazette mail article published on veterans day, november 11, 2017.

Frank is survived by his wife of 32 years, nancy nutter morris; son, philip coleman hosimer (rosemarie) of rochester, ny; daughter, julia ellen (tom) suiter of raleigh, nc; grandchild, karson hosimer of rochester, ny; step-son, robert e. (laura) morris of orlando, fl; step-daughters, patricia m. Dillard and katherine m. Cassidy (dan) of greenville, sc.

Memorial service will be 2 pm tuesday, february 13, 2018 at the unitarian universalist congregation, charleston with rev. Mel hoover and rev. Rose edington officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 5 to 7 pm monday, february 12, 2018 at barlow bonsall funeral home, charleston.
