Obituary

George G. Lawson, Sr., 80, of Dunbar, WV, passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon, September 29, 2024, at Hospice Care – CAMC following a short illness.

George was born in Charleston, WV, and attended Kanawha County schools and was a graduate of Charleston High School, where he excelled in sports. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Army where he proudly served as a member of the 173rd Airbourne Brigade during the Vietnam Conflict.

He returned home to begin his family and attend WV State College. After working at Spring Hill Cemetery for a period of time, he began working at local chemical plants which saw him employed from FMC to Bayer Crop Science from which he retired.

George was reunited with his first love (his words), and they married and remained together for 38 years until his passing. George loved his family and friends, but most of all he loved the Lord, and he could be found praising God at the First Baptist Church of Vandalia where he was a member of the Men’s Chorus and an ordained Deacon and served until his health started to decline.

His love of WVU football was legendary. He never missed a game. His favorite baseball team was the Cincinnati Reds.

George was preceded in death by his parents Joseph E. and Ludelia (Johnson) Lawson, brothers James and Joseph Jr. and sister Ruth Henderson.

He is survived by wife Jackie, son George Jr., daughters, Mary Lawson and Michele Long, bonus children, Michael Brown, Anthony Brown, and Shannon Brown, twenty-one grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, sister, Mary Booker, and brothers, William T. (Janet), Rev. Frank E. (Cindy).

George grew up surrounded by the love of family and friends and was guided by that love and support that carried him throughout his lifetime. George will be remembered by all for his loving and kind nature. His willingness to help others often extended beyond his family.

A celebration of George’s life will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at First Baptist Church, 432 Shrewsbury Street, Charleston, WV.

Visitation will begin one hour prior (11:00 am) to the service.
