Obituary
Georgia farha hamra, 90, of charleston passed away on sunday, april 30th after a short illness. She was a member of st. John’s episcopal church. She was a dedicated and loving daughter, wife and mother. She was preceded in death by her forever giving and loving parents, aziz and bahia farha; beloved husband, jack; loving sisters, genevieve dawahare and virginia tuma; and brother sidney farha. She was the proud mother of brian hamra, donna hamra and christa hamra, all of charleston , wv , and david hamra of tucson , az. she was so proud of her four grandchildren, nicholas hamra, nasha hamra, sarah (hamra) walter and joshua hamra, as well as her great granddaughter, sophia hamra and her 2 great grandchildren on the way. She is survived by her sister, vivian swyden of kansas city, mo; and brother, eddie farha of beckley , wv , numerous nieces, nephews and cousins throughout the country and all loved so much.
She was born in st. Louis , mo , and grew up in detriot , mi , where she attended wayne state university . She and her sisters were billed as the four farha sisters and sang at numerous functions and on local radio. Upon her arrival in west virginia she joined calvary episcopal church in montgomery where she and her husband were married and raised all four children in the church. While an active member of calvary, she was president of the ecw, member of the choir and altar guild. For over 70 years the family was in the wholesale tobacco, candy and dry goods business. Georgia and her husband were involved in the wv wholesalers association, where she received the first lady lifetime achievement award.
After the death of her husband, georgia moved to charleston and joined st john’s episcopal church. She was a member of the evangelism committee, on the altar guild, a greeter and a volunteer at the back door opportunity shop and served breakfast at manna meal every friday.
She enjoyed tennis with the girls, traveling the world, playing bridge, cultural events, throwing parties and a good margarita or gin and tonic! Georgia will forever be known for her fun-loving, outgoing, life of the party personality. The hilarious antics of the “golden girls”, as they were known, were legendary!
After having knee replacement surgery at st. Francis hospital and receiving great care, she decided she wanted to be a volunteer there and help other families. For years, she took great pride in volunteering at the hospital as family members waited for their loved ones to come out of surgery.
The family will have a basket set out for you to bring a written story of your favorite memory or story of georgia. There will also be note paper and pens if you prefer to write it when you get there. In addition, we will have donation envelopes for both hubbard hospice house and alzheimer’s association. Both agencies were instrumental in georgia’s care and the family’s ability to do what was best for her.
A celebration of life will be held in honor of georgia hamra on friday, june 9th at the clay center, 1 clay square, charleston, wv 25301, from 6:00-9:00 pm. This is a true celebration of the glorious life she lived. As the quintessential social butterfly, we will honor her with the best party she has ever thrown- music, food, drinks and laughter- all shared with friends and family.
The church service will be held at 4:00 p.M. Saturday, june 10th at st. John’s episcopal church, 1105 quarrier st, charleston wv 25301. A reception will follow in the church’s hunter hall.
