Obituary

Gloria tabit, 87, of charleston, passed away peacefully at her home on january 12, 2017.

Known for her bright, beautiful smile and infectious personality, gloria loved people, and they loved her.  she had many friends of all ages and from all walks of life. She attended sacred heart grade school, graduated from charleston high school, and attended morris harvey college, now the university of charleston, where she was a member of phi kappa gamma sorority.

Retired from the state treasurer’s office, she worked as a disbursement supervisor for treasurers ronald pearson and larry bailey.  perhaps she is best known, along with her brother, george “junior” and sister, josephine “dossie” for running “the strand,” an iconic charleston restaurant and pool hall founded by their father and later purchased by dear family friend, the late mose cassis.

A lifelong charlestonian, gloria was passionate about her love for her hometown and participated in and supported various philanthropic activities, including the march of dimes, the cystic fibrosis foundation, and kanawha players.  she was a board member of “keep a child in school.”

gloria was also a very talented artist.  although none of these skills was genetically passed to her children, she loved mentoring her young cousin, matthew ayoob, a very skilled artist, during her later years.

Gloria was preceded in death by her husband, charles; her parents, george and samily jacobs; her sister, josephine fish and brother-in-law, bill; her brother, george “junior” jacobs and sister-in-law, julia; granddaughter hallie tabit johnson; and nephew bobby jacobs.

All who knew her knew that gloria’s love of and commitment to family was unparalleled.  she was proud to be the matriarch of a large family.

She is survived by daughters, joanna tabit, diana white and her husband, tim, and annette reynolds and her husband, jeff.  although she loved her daughters dearly, her grandsons, craig tabit and jeff reynolds, were unquestionably the lights of her life.

Gloria is also survived by loving nieces and nephews: karen fish, nancy stark, lynn fish, cindy fish, pat jacobs, and anne jacobs.  she also leaves behind many beloved cousins and extended family.

Mass of christian burial will be held at 1:00 p.M., monday, january 16, 2017, at the basilica of the co-cathedral of the sacred heart, charleston, with monsignor p. Edward sadie officiating.  entombment will follow at mount olivet catholic cemetery, charleston. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.M., sunday, january 15, 2017, at barlow bonsall funeral home, charleston and one hour prior to the service at the church on monday, january 16, 2017.

May Fond Memories Of Your Dear Loved One Bring You Comfort During This Hard Time In Your Life. Look Back On All The Good Memories You Were Able To Have And Smile At The Fact That You Were Able To Share These.  My Heart And Sympathies Go Out To You And Your Family.

Proverbs 10:7 The Memory Of The Righteous One Is Due For A Blessing.”

Something That Gives Us Great Comfort Is The Bible Truth That Death Is Not The Dot Or Period At The End Of A Sentence, But Rather The Comma Or Pause Because Our Dear Loved Ones Will Live Again. We Know That We Will See Our Loved Ones Again Because The Beautiful Promise Recorded At Revelation 21:4 “And He Will Wipe Out Every Tear From Their Eyes, And Death Will Be No More, Neither Will Mourning Nor Outcry Nor Pain Be Anymore.”  What A Truly Special Day So Close At Hand To Be Able To Embrace Our Loved Ones Again!

We Were Saddened To Learn Of The Passing Of Your Mother, Gloria. May Her Memory Be Eternal, And May The Peace Of Christ Comfort And Uplift You Through These Times.

With The Saints Give Rest, O Christ, To The Soul Of Thy Servant, Gloria, In That Place Of Brightness, That Place Of Verdure, That Place Of Repose, Where There Is Neither Sickness, Nor Sorrow, Nor Sighing, But Life Everlasting.
