Obituary

Harold David Moore, 87, of Charleston, WV, passed away January 15, 2026, at home.

He was born October 10, 1938, in Ward, WV, the son of Austin H. and Ruth (Gunnoe) Moore. Harold was a graduate of Charleston High School, West Virginia University Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science degree, and Marshall University where he earned his master’s degree. In 2011, he was inducted into WVUIT’s Football Hall of Fame. Before retiring, he was employed at George Washington High School, teaching 10th grade biology. He also served as the athletic director while at GW, coaching football, basketball, baseball, wrestling, golf and track. Harold was also a member and Past Potentate of Beni Kedem Shrine Temple, Scottish Rite, Jesters and a 33rd Degree Mason.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his younger brother, Stanley Moore.

Harold is survived by his wife of 58 years, Evelyn (Gladwell) Moore; children, David Moore, Jason Moore, and Heather (Gary) Wartenburg; grandchildren, Gretchen and Harold III, and his dog, Buttercup.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Harold’s name to the Shriners Children’s Hospital.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
