Obituary

Harold Thomas Givens, Jr., “Tom,” passed away on August 6, 2023, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born in Charleston, West Virginia, on May 12, 1948, he was the son of the late Harold T. Givens, Sr., and Garnet Givens.

Tom grew up on Charleston’s West Side and was a beloved brother to his ten siblings: the late Wilma Guthrie and Sarah Lucenti, Danny Givens, Gary Givens, Mickey Givens, Mikey Givens, Jeanie Hudson, Janie Givens, Robbie Givens, and Paula Aleshire.

In 1966, Tom graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School. After graduation, Tom served with honor during the Vietnam War in the United States Air Force, bravely dedicating himself to the service of his country. His selflessness and courage in the face of adversity were a source of inspiration to all who knew him.

In 2008, Tom found love and companionship when he married Kimberly Comer. Together, they forged a bond of love and support that enriched both of their lives. Tom’s legacy lives on in the hearts of Kim, his siblings, many nieces and nephews, stepdaughters Krista Comer Rosencrance and Kelsey Comer, and step-grandsons, whose lives he touched with his kindness and warmth.

Throughout his life, Tom exemplified qualities that endeared him to everyone he encountered. A dedicated and hard worker, he labored tirelessly, both in the family business and during his tenure as a fireman for the Charleston Fire Department. Tom’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish his own successful hardwood flooring business. Tom’s easy-going nature, infectious humor, and unwavering positivity made him a treasured friend and confidant. He will be missed by many.

Memorial service to honor Tom’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 14, 2023, at Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home, 1118 Virginia Street E., Charleston, WV.

Visitation will begin one hour prior at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Veterans of Foreign Wars, online at vfw.org, in honor of Tom’s legacy of service and compassion.
