Obituary
Harriet Eunice (Maxey) Deel, of Charleston, WV, died peacefully on October 24, 2023, at the age of 87.
She was the daughter of Clyde Maxey and Sarah Elizabeth Maxey (Young), both deceased. She was also preceded in death by her husband Billy Gene Deel, by her brother John Maxey and by her sisters Jane Wieciech (Maxey), Elizabeth Henry (Maxey), and Roxey Thompson (Maxey).
Harriet was a graduate of Spanishburg High School, Concord College (B.A.), Duke University (M.A.) and West Virginia University (Ed.D.). She taught home economics and biology at Bramwell High School before becoming the Director of Child Nutrition for Mercer County Schools. When her husband was transferred to be the pastor of St. Peter’s United Methodist in St. Albans, she accepted a position supervising lunches for summer children’s programs across the state. She rose to become the Director of Child Nutrition for the West Virginia State Department of Education and held that position at her retirement.
Harriet is survived by her sons Bradford W. Deel (wife Leslie), Conrad E. Deel (wife Susan), and by her sister Lois Rosenow (Maxey). She is also survived by her granddaughters Ashley R. Dawe (Deel) (husband Kyle), Arianna E. Deel, and Anessa E. Deel.
Harriet’s grit and determination throughout her life was demonstrated when someone told her she should quit her Ed.D. program because she would be 57 by the time she finished and she responded, “and I’ll be 57 if I don’t finish so I may as well keep going.”
A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 11, 2023, at Christ Church United Methodist, 1221 Quarrier Street, Charleston, WV. Lunch will be served following the service.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Christ Church United Methodist, Hospice Care, or to the Maxey/Deel scholarship fund at Concord University in Athens, WV.
