Obituary

The Honorable George Vergano Piper, beloved husband of Mikee Furby Piper, passed away unexpectedly at home on the eighth day of August, 2022.

Saying goodbye to George is hard for all who knew him and care for him. George quietly went through life always caring for and helping others. He always had a smile and was always a friend. George stepped into tomorrow as softly as he entered a room . . . with his wife, Mikee, by his side, holding his hand and speaking of her love for him. “You will never age for me, nor fade, nor die.” William Shakespeare

George was a descendant of the Piper Cub Airplane inventor. He was a well-known attorney in Charleston, West Virginia, and across the state. He was born in Ithaca, New York, and moved to Beckley, West Virginia, in his youth. He attended Mercersburg Academy and graduated from Staunton Military Academy. He went to school at Furman University and upon graduation was accepted to the West Virginia University College of Law. He had a wide-ranging law practice, evidence of his legal skill. He retired as a judge for the state of West Virginia.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 46 years, Mikee Furby Piper, and numerous friends and family members. He will be remembered for his kindness, wit, generosity, thoughtfulness, and love of golf and travel.

The funeral service is scheduled to be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 12, 2022, at Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home, 1118 Virginia Street East, Charleston, West Virginia. The service of interment will be crypt side at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, South Charleston, West Virginia, immediately following the service.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105.

“He was my North, my South, my East, and my West, my working week and my Sunday rest, my noon, my midnight, my talk, my song, I thought that love would last forever; I was wrong.” W.H. Auden

  1. So sorry to hear of the passing of George. Sending prayers to his family and friends 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

  2. Lots of people wish for a ‘do-over.’ Some people wish it for a lot of reasons. But as I sit here thinking about George Piper, tears in my eyes, I wish I had that do-over last week to call him. If I had it, I’d tell him how very much he means to me and my family. George was like a second father to my son, Justin. And many of you know why that was truly special. Justin loved George and Mikee, and their nephew Matthew. Period. Absolutely loved them. In fact, there was no place on earth that he’d rather be then “Heading down to Mikee’s.” There were days when I had to call to remind him of where he really lived, and he begrudgingly came home. I’m sure he was thinking on his walk down Sweetbriar …”No more movies for the day. No more awesome meals from Aunt Mikee for the day … No more golfing with George and antics with Matthew … No more candy or fun … No sleep over tonight …” That is, until the next very day when it all began again and, letting front door slam behind him, he’d say, “Headed down to Mikee’s.” For all of the love, care, time and attention that George and Mikee gave to Justin, I’m eternally grateful. But it wasn’t just our family that they touched. Mikee and George gave to everyone. Literally, and I mean literally, to anyone in need. Other than my husband (the second most generous and deeply caring man in the world) I give the number one honor to George today. How lucky I am that our stars aligned in just the right way to have our families merge and be forever be connected by such generous and loving spirits. George, not only were you brilliant (my Goodness, you could have been a history/political science professor instead of a lawyer/judge!), but you were also funny (to the point of being downright hilarious), and, again, SO very generous and loving. There is a special place for you in heaven, George. Go claim what is rightfully yours, though, I imagine you’d be ready to pass it to someone in need. That is just YOU. If only I had called you to tell you this last week. If only I had a minute a minute ago. But I also think, somehow, you would forgive me for not saying it enough. George, you are the kindest person I know. Your spirit and legacy will live on. Thank God for you. Thank God our worlds crossed for the shortest of times. Rest well, George. You deserve it. You are loved.

  3. Mikee, my sincere sympathies and condolences to you on your loss of George. In 2004, George and I met after my start at the Office of Tax Appeals. He helped me through the initial ins and outs of the agency and became a long time colleague until his retirement from there in 2015. I relied on George for a lot of things and most of all his friendship and humor. In my position there, George was Of immense help often on legal matters. But most of all, I will miss his wit and kindness. He was always there to help or just chat at the end of a long day. All in all he was a loyal fiend and colleague and I will sorely miss him. God Speed Mikee. Rest In Peace George.
