Obituary

Hubert “Gene” E. Bain of Charleston, West Virginia, passed away on April 7, 2026, following a long illness that he faced with remarkable strength, authenticity, and love. Born on November 8, 1955, Gene lived a life defined by resilience, creativity, generosity, and deep devotion to those he held dear.

Gene was the beloved son of Donald Bain and Esther M. (Day) Bain. Throughout his life, he was fiercely protective of his family and took immense pride in being the very best uncle imaginable. He is survived by his niece, Adriann Saunders, and nephew Brian Santoro, both of whom held a special place in his heart. His love for them was unwavering, and his guidance, humor, and loyalty will be missed beyond measure.

An adventurer at heart, Gene found his greatest joy outdoors. He loved nothing more than sharing his passion for camping, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, and other outdoor activities with friends and family. Those moments—around campfires, on quiet waters, and along winding trails—were true reflections of who Gene was: generous with his time, enthusiastic in spirit, and happiest when creating memories with others.

Gene was also a skilled and passionate creator. He loved to cook and took great pride in fixing and improving houses, always eager to lend a helping hand. An accomplished and gifted artist, he specialized in stained glass and proudly shared his work at many art shows. His artistry reflected his soul—bold, detailed, and full of light—and his beautiful pieces remain a lasting testament to his creativity and vision.

Above all else, Gene cherished his pets, who were faithful companions and a source of comfort and joy throughout his life. Even through years of illness, he continued to live fully and authentically, meeting each day with courage, humor, and love.

A memorial program celebrating Gene’s life will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Charleston.

In lieu of flowers and gifts, donations may be made in Gene’s name to the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association, honoring his deep love and compassion for animals.

Gene’s memory will live on in all who loved him, in the stories shared, the art he created, the trails he walked, and the hearts he touched. His legacy of strength, loyalty, and love will never be forgotten.
