Obituary

James Keith Hopkins, 78, of South Charleston, WV, departed this life on August 19, 2025, at CAMC-General after fighting a courageous battle with kidney failure and other complications.

Jim (or Jimbo as most of his friends and family called him) was born in Princeton, Mercer County, WV, on November 12, 1946. He graduated from Athens High School in Athens, WV, and obtained a B.S. degree from Concord College. He was also a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He was retired, having spent his last 12 years of employment at Dinsmore and Shohl, where he genuinely loved his job and those around him. He attended United Disciples of Christ Church (formerly Boyd Memorial Christian Church).

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Lowell Burman Hopkins, and Bessie Cleo Fletcher Hopkins Bridgman, and his dearly beloved sister, Carolyn Annise Hopkins Herzberg. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Rebecca “Becky” Sothen Hopkins, of South Charleston, WV; his son, Brian Hopkins (Jill), granddaughters Katelyn Jill and Holly Elizabeth Hopkins of Hurricane, WV; his daughter, Sarah Brown (Scott), grandson Gannon Michael Morris and granddaughter Madalyn Elizabeth Morris, grandson, Chase Alexander Brown of Charleston, WV, and granddaughter Noelle Elizabeth Brown of Barboursville, WV; niece Natalie Neff (Kyle) of Sarasota, FL; nephew Tom Herzberg (Lorraine) of Freeland, MD; and brother-in-law, Rick (Terri) Sothen of Goodyear, AZ, as well as many other family members and friends.

Jim dearly adored his loving grandchildren and proudly attended their sports, educational, and social functions. His grandchildren were the love of his life, and he felt so blessed to have such a loving and caring family. Jim loved playing golf with family and friends whenever he had the opportunity, and when he was not playing golf, he was watching golf on TV – for prolonged periods of time.

The service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at United Disciples of Christ Church, with Pastor Steven A. Smith officiating. Entombment will be at a later date.

Family and friends will be received one hour before the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to United Disciples of Christ Church, 100 United Disciple Dr., Charleston, WV 25309 and http://www.uniteddisciples.org/; Kanawha County Humane Society; American Heart Association, and/or any local women’s shelter.

I am saddened by Jim’s passing. He was my second cousin and friend during high school and later in life. We were mostly typical teenagers staying out of trouble most of the time. There are too many stories to share here. We lost touch for over 20 years due to my long stint in the US Navy, but met up again in 1996. From that point forward, we played a lot of good and bad golf together. Our families also became friends and we had many a get-together. We also ran several 5K races together. Jim, I will miss you and I’m sorry you had so much pain the last few years. Your friend and cousin Tom.
