Obituary
Janet was born in Woodhaven, NY, on August 9, 1932.
Janet had a very bubbly personality, a great character, and an extroverted demeanor, which carried on her whole life. She spoke fondly of her youth: school, girl scouts, many friends, and her beloved family as she grew up in New York. Janet graduated from technical / secretarial school and worked as an executive secretary in Manhattan for Colombia Gas from 1951 to 1957. While at Columbia Gas, she met and then married the love of her life on May 9, 1953, Andrew “Andy” Kessock Jr., a mechanical engineer who served in the U.S. Coast Guard. During their marriage, Janet and Andy (and their three sons) moved to several cities due to Andy’s upwardly mobile and long career at Columbia Gas. After time in New York, they resided in Columbus, OH, Huntington, WV, Hicksville, NY, Syosset, NY, Wilmington, DE, and then returning to Charleston, WV. in 1973 where she lived the rest of her life.
In addition to supporting her husband, his career until retirement, and their 56 year-long marriage, Janet raised and loved her three sons Robert, Alan and David, as well as cared for her own Mother, Ethyl, for twenty years. Janet was a strong woman who fought and survived breast cancer and a stroke in her late 40’s. Janet spent a great deal of her time with her beloved granddaughter Amy, her husband Chris Combs, and her great-grandson Andrew. Throughout her adult life, Janet was always very social, frequently entertaining, going out with other couples, traveling, cooking, working on genealogy, working on her computer, and otherwise enjoying her family and many friends. She had many life-long dear girlfriends that also reside in Charleston. These ladies met her for lunches, dinners and crafts. During her life, Janet was active in her church, tennis, swimming and gardening (a member of the Rolling Hills Garden Club for many years). She also attended many school and special events, graduations, marriages and reunions. She enjoyed water aerobics into her mid-80s.
Janet was preceded in death by both of her parents, Edmund B. and Ethyl Carlson, her husband Andy Kessock Jr., her brother Dr. Richard Carlson, her granddaughter, Amy Kessock Combs, and her step granddaughter Kara Stowers.
She is survived by her three sons, Robert Andrew Kessock of Charleston, WV and his wife Kim, Alan Edmund Kessock of Fort Collins, CO and his wife Rebecca, and David Richard Kessock of Tulsa, OK. Additionally, she leaves behind her sister, Nancy Ellen Carlson Hollis of Ocala, FL and her family, her sister-in-law Anna Carlson of West Alexandria, OH and her family, her grandchildren Alex Parker Kessock of Lafayette, CO, Taylor Morgan Kessock of New York, NY, her step granddaughter Candice Eberhard and her step granddaughter Jessica Stowers and her great-grandson Andrew Combs of Hurricane, WV.
Lastly, there are many people who also loved Janet.
All of us will miss her ever-present smile, laugh and good nature.
She will be buried during a private family ceremony alongside her husband Andy at Graceland Memorial Park in South Charleston, WV.

I’m thinking of all of you and am so sorry for your loss. Janet was such a good friend to my mom, Rose Marie, and to me when I lived in Charleston. She always smiled and enjoyed the company of her friends. I will remember her visiting and gardening in her yard in Rolling Hills. Condolences, Lori
