Obituary

It is with great sorrow and sadness that the Dodd family must announce the passing of beloved wife and mother, Janet Sue Dodd. Blessed with eighty-six years of life, she was born in Belle, on June 11, 1939, before moving to Charleston, (Dutch Road), at a young age. A graduate of Charleston High School and former employee and stenographer of the State of West Virginia, she loved flowers and caring for them, appreciated a good vacation, road trip or afternoon drive, and was always happy to indulge her sweet tooth. She enjoyed cooking, fruit smoothies, and crossword puzzles, but most of all, dutifully dedicated her life to maintaining a comforting home for her family. Despite the illness at the end of her life, she smiled, joked, advised and worried for them until the final days.

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” (Pslam 116:15). Though we grieve, we also rejoice, knowing that Janet is at peace, healed, and in the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Faith and love will remain her lasting testimony.

Survived and missed by her husband of 67 years, David Dodd Sr., sons David Jr., Timothy, and Jonathan, and the apple of her eye, grandson, Alex.

Preceded in death by her parents, Eugene C. Given Sr. and Ruby Cunningham Given, and her brother, Eugene C. Given Jr.

Special tribute to her caregiver, Katherine Rucker, who never left her side. “And if two of you are gathered together, then there is a whole world, a world of living love.”

Great appreciation as well extended to Brenda White, LPN, for her gracious support.

Funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at Maranatha Baptist Church, Charleston, (I-77, exit 111, take Call Road and Old Tuppers Creek Road). Reverend Kevan Bartlett will officiate.

Visitation will begin one hour prior at the church.

Condolences may be sent to the family at www.barlowbonsall.com.

Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

I’m sorry sorry to hear this. Janet and David started as clients of mine in Myrtle Beach and quickly became friends. I always enjoyed our visits and going to eat together. Janet was such a sweet and genuine person. My thoughts are with David and her family and friends and I’m lifting you all up in prayer. Thank you Janet for being a warm and shining light every time we were together. You will be missed.
