Obituary
Jean M. Barnes, of Charleston, WV, born Delores Jean Maddox on February 25, 1934, to Basil and Dorthy (Parsons) Maddox, was raised in Jackson and Kanawha Counties of West Virginia. She is a descendant of Michael Kerns (Kerns Fort) of Morgantown, WV. Following her 1952 graduation from Stonewall Jackson High School, Jean worked at Union Carbide on the Island as a typist. On September 21, 1957, she married Robert Barnes. The ceremony was held in Charleston.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Robert K. Barnes, who retired from Union Carbide; her brother, Herman Maddox of Washington state, and sister, Ann Parsons of Ohio.
Jean and Robert have three sons, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a faithful niece Sally (Craig) Aldridge. Their eldest son is David with Debbie (Lamp) Barnes, grandson Christopher with Beth (Hubbard) Barnes, great-granddaughter Madison Barnes, and grandson Matthew Barnes with Liz Sweet, greats Benjamin and Macie Barnes. Their second born is son John with Donna (Queen) Barnes, grandson James Barnes with Elora De Gray and granddaughter Rebecca with Christopher Barnum, greats Amelia and Arthur Barnum. The youngest son is Paul Barnes.
Jean’s family will remember her joy of baking and sewing for the family. Her talents for hand-stitched quilts were on display at the Charleston Cultural Center. Some may remember her as the lady that gave dollar coins to young children of the community. Jean passed October 2. 2025, peacefully and with family by her side. She is with the Lord and her husband.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home, 1118 Virginia Street East, Charleston, WV, with Rev. Dr. Bill Myers officiating. Immediately following, entombment will be in the mausoleum at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston, WV.
Visitation will begin one hour prior at the funeral home.

Jean was exceptionally warm and friendly. When I lived on her floor at Edgewood Summit, she invited me to come to her apartment to see her needlework.
I was awed by her beautiful work.
I will always remember Jean’s friendship.
