Obituary

Jewell Agnes Griffith Haddad, 98, of Charleston, WV, passed away peacefully with her son by her side at Hubbard Hospice House on Friday, July 14, 2023, following a short illness. Jewell lived a long and independent life, driving until a month before she died and living alone in her home of nearly sixty years until a week prior to her death.

Born the second of ten children to James K. “Kenner” and Bremen Woods Griffith, Jewell grew up in Alum Creek, WV, before graduating high school at the age of 16 and moving to the big city of Charleston. She worked at Charleston City Hall, then WCHS before joining the secretarial pool at United Fuel (which eventually became Columbia Gas Transmission Company). Jewell retired from Columbia Gas in 1991 after 33 years of employment, reaching the position of executive secretary to the president of the company.

Jewell was preceded in death by her husband, Philip Haddad, and daughter, Lesley Haddad Meadows (Tracy), as well as siblings Betty Griffith Riling, Faye Griffith Yerrid, Kenny Griffith, Patty Griffith Dimmock, and Doug Griffith.

She leaves behind son David Haddad (Eleanor); grandchildren Sarah Haddad Cothran (Shawn), Rebecca Haddad, Philip Haddad (Jesse), Alyson Meadows, and Collin Meadows; great grand-children Ransom Cothran, Auggie Haddad, Eisley Cothran, Nora Haddad, Hazel Haddad, and Victor Cothran; siblings Phyllis Griffith, Jeanette Rieck (Bob), Carley Means (Dale), and Jack Griffith (Loxley); sister-in-law and Thelma to her Louise, JoAnn Haddad; and many nieces and nephews.

Jewell enjoyed Jitterbug dancing with her husband, Philip, during the Big Band era and much later, was the number one fan of daughter Lesley’s clogging team, The West Virginia Kickers. She was active in several organizations including The Pilot Club of Charleston, The Shepherd’s Center, and The GasCo Club. In retirement, she turned her love of sewing into quilting and created many beautiful quilts for her friends and family members and even had one on display at the West Virginia State Cultural Center. Jewell was a member of St. George Orthodox Christian Cathedral and took great comfort in the companionship and community there.

Funeral service in honor of Jewell’s life will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday, July 22, 2023, at St. George Cathedral, 190 Court Street, Charleston, WV. Burial will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to The Shepherd’s Center of Charleston.
