Obituary
JoAnn C. Smith was born on February 4, 1938, in Harewood, West Virginia. She grew up in the Rand community and attended Levi First Baptist Church, where she was a member for over 50 years and where she was in the Senior Choir later in life.
JoAnn, affectionately known by friends and family as Jo or Nana Jo, graduated from Garnet High School. She moved to Brooklyn, New York, where she worked in the Textile industry for 20-plus years.
In 1976, she selflessly moved back to West Virginia from her life in New York to care for her younger siblings when their mother passed away. This act of love and dedication set the tone for JoAnn’s life, showcasing her unwavering commitment to family.
She was known for her quick wit and sense of humor. And her cooking skills were legendary, with her homemade meals serving as a centerpiece for many gatherings and celebrations.
The Lord called JoAnn home on February 6, 2024. She passed away peacefully at the age of 86. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and two sisters. JoAnn is survived by two brothers, five sisters, a host of granddaughters, grandsons, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.
Though she may no longer be with us in body, her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to have been touched by her presence.
A celebration of JoAnn’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at Levi First Missionary Baptist Church.
Rest in peace, Jo. You will never be forgotten.
