Obituary
John David Young, 81, of Charleston, WV, passed away unexpectedly at home on May 11, 2025. A lifelong West Virginian, John was a kind soul, known for his infectious laugh, unwavering loyalty, and deep love for God, his family, the Cincinnati Reds, and good food. He began each day by reading the Bible and the sports page — a testament to his faith and passion for sports.
John dedicated 37 years of service to the State of West Virginia’s Department of Human Services. A devoted member of Spirit Life Fellowship Church (formerly Oakridge Bible Church), he was actively involved in the praise team, sang tenor in the choir, and found great joy in his faith and fellowship.
An avid sports fan, John was a proud and vocal supporter of the Cincinnati Reds and the West Virginia Mountaineers — often singing the WVU fight song and “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” with great enthusiasm.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jake and Grace Young, and his sister, Nancy (Donald) Metz.
John is survived by his nieces, Mary Beth Mounts, Kara (Antonio) Manchin, and Tana (Jayson) Pendell; nephews, Donald Metz (Lisa Brewer) and James (Peggy) Metz; his longtime friend and mentor, Ailene Lee, and several great-great-nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind many dear friends, church members, neighbors, and his beloved dogs — Georgia, Bubbles, and Molly.
John lived a joyful life filled with love, laughter, music, and meaningful fellowship. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at Spirit Life Fellowship Church, 2167 Oakridge Drive, Charleston, WV 25311.
Visitation will begin two hours prior at the church.

John was always smiling, and his infectious laugh, beautiful attitude and faith in God made John a pleasure to be around and a real inspiration. It was a blessing to have known John since I was a little girl. I’m just so glad I got to attend his 80th birthday party. It was wonderful seeing his excitement opening his gifts and his pleasure having all those people there who cared about him. Rest in peace, sweet, gentle man of God.
