Obituary

John kinports brallier iii died at age 74 on may 20, 2018. Born to john k. Jr. And mildred (wallace) brallier in pittsburgh, pa, he grew up in ligonier, pa. He graduated from alderson-broaddus college (now abu) in 1967 and served in the united states army 1967-1969. Upon discharge, he worked 10 years in the business offices of the diamond department store before his employment as the business manager at the wvu health sciences center “” charleston division, from which he retired in 2009.

Above all, he loved the family he created with his wife, nancy kay layne, whom he married in 1968, and his family of origin. A close second may have been the steeler nation and anything pittsburgh. Additionally he had several groups and individuals who were surrogate families — his “work families,” his college fraternity brothers, and the beloved dogs and cat who shared his home. Over the years, he had volunteered in several organizations including junior achievement, the original ronald mcdonald house, and mowing at first presbyterian church where he was a member.

Preceding him in death were his parents, an infant brother, his “mummum” minnie davis wallace, his beloved great aunt edna grafe, as well as other loved family members who shaped his formative years. He is survived by his wife, nancy; his attentive and devoted daughters, elizabeth (beth) moorhead brallier (pittsburgh) and rebecca (becca) layne stansbury (morgantown); his son-in-law, robert c. Stansbury; and the “gifts” of his later years, his grandchildren, isaac john and avery elizabeth stansbury. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, hugh w. And nancy z. Brallier (ligonier, pa) and jess m. Brallier and sally chabert (nyc). He will also be missed by nancy’s sisters, shirley anne layne and janet mcdonnell caruthers, both of charleston. He was the proud uncle of jess w. Brallier (heidi bertels); laurie anderson (david); max chabert brallier (alyse diamond); ruby chabert brallier; and bryan mcdonnell. He was also a great uncle to anouk, isla, lila, frances, hollace, garrison, hilde, and godfrey. Additionally, he is survived by his maternal aunt, gaynelle wordemann (san luis obispo, ca), and his former sister-in-law, debra l. Brallier (santa fe, nm). Lastly, he will be missed by his most cherished family friends david and joann walker.

The family would like to share their appreciation for chlora dayhaw and judy morton who have provided additional support. In his last days, he was cared for by many of the staff at camc. His family is especially grateful for the care by the memorial er staff and the compassionate care given by the nursing and ancillary staff at general division on 3-south, 4-central, 5-south and 7-south. His treating physicians were very helpful as they answered the family’s numerous questions and administered care. The family has not named you each individually, but hopes you know who you are and that your acts of kindness and care are etched in their memories.

In 2002, john was a liver transplant recipient at upmc allowing him and his loved ones an additional 16 years. Although he had a live donor, his family remains ardent supporters of organ donation. If you are able and have not registered as an organ donor, please consider doing so today. You may give life to a recipient, joy to a family, and/or knowledge to medical researchers.

Arrangements are incomplete and services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, if you wish to memorialize john, please consider a gift to one of the following: family house of pittsburgh, 5001 baum blvd., ste. 545, pittsburgh, pa 15213; kanawha-charleston humane association, 1248 greenbrier st., charleston, wv 25311, or the lambda omega mu scholarship fund, abu, 101 college hill road, philippi, wv 26416 or to the charity of your choice.

  1. Just thinking about the Diamond and great crew – John was a large part of that. Beautiful and kind special Nancy – my heart goes out to you. This is late, but death does not keep time.
