Obituary

John W. Thompson, 94, of Charleston, WV, was called home on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, in Charleston.

He was born May 12, 1931, in Circleville, WV, a son of the late Leslie E. and Bessie L. (Vandevander) Thompson. Also preceding him in death was his brother, Charles Leslie Thompshon, and his son, John Charles Thompson.

John (Wayne) retired after 42 years of employment with Mountaineer Gas. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Morris Harvey College in 1953. Growing up in Charleston (Kanawha City), he graduated from Charleston High School.

A long-time resident of St. Albans, WV, he supported local Little League Baseball and football programs. He loved golf and hunting and was a long-time WVU Mountaineer fan, enjoying watching games with family when possible.

He is survived by Caroline Thompson, daughter; Sandra McArdle (Joe), daughter; Scott Thompson, son; grandchildren, Rob Lyles, Sean McArdle, Colin McArdle, and great granddaughter, Emaly Lyles.

Special appreciation is credited to his care teams of Veterans Administration and Home Health, Visiting Angels, CAMC Memorial, Charleston Healthcare Center, and Hubbard Hospice House.

A private memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
