Obituary

Jonathan Howard Kuhn, 53, passed away at home suddenly on Saturday, November 16, 2024.

John was the child of Howard and Gladys Kuhn, born on May 23, 1971, in Eugene, OR. He attended St. Agnes Grade School, Charleston Catholic High School, Marshall University and West Virginia Institute of Technology. He had a Bachelor of Arts degree. His major was criminal justice and his minor was psychology.

After graduation, he worked as a security guard and was the co-owner of a security company until his health failed. He then worked as a material services handler for CAMC, again until his health failed.

He believed in service and was a longtime member of the Lions Club International, South Charleston Lions Club. He received the Leonard Jarrett Award in 2017 in recognition of distinguished service for sight and hearing from the West Virginia Lions Sight Conservation Foundation, Inc. He enjoyed his many Lions’ friendships.

John was the quintessential outdoorsman. He loved camping and hiking. His spirit was complete in our wondrous West Virginia mountains, forests and rivers. He was a member of the West Virginia Master Naturalists and especially enjoyed the snake classes and field trips, and trail building with his like-minded friends.

John was generous, kind, funny and fun-loving. His wish to be an organ donor was fulfilled. He was always available if anyone needed help. He had a great sense of humor. He was known for watching comedy movies and being able to repeat the humorous lines word for word and making everybody laugh. His spirit was highly adventurous and he enjoyed nothing more than a good challenge, especially outdoors. His pet cats, Max and Magnum, were his joy.

He is survived by his parents, Howard (deceased March 12, 2025) and Gladys Kuhn; his brother, Joel (Amy) Kuhn; his nephew, Nathaniel Kuhn; his niece, Abby Brunty; his godson, Sam Chappell, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Fred and Julitta Kuhn; his maternal grandparents, Ed and Adelaide Roers; his aunt, Judy Wagner; his aunt, Carol Kuhn; his aunt, Mary Kuhn; his dear friend and first cousin, Teddy Wagner, and his cousin, Conan Lee Bitzan-Maus.
John’s family expresses heartfelt thanks to the medical personnel who have cared for him at Cleveland Clinic. Special thanks to Dr. Jenee Walker and to Dr. Mark Lambert in Charleston, who have cared for him for a quarter century, and to Dr. Betul Hatipoglu in Cleveland.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 16, 2025, at Seven Dolors Church in Millerville, MN. John will be interred in our ancestors’ cemetery near his cousin, Teddy Wagner.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Dolly Sods Wilderness Stewards program. The donation site is available online under the above name. John loved this area and camped and explored there as often as he could.
