Obituary

Joseph C. Riley, born August 29, 1937, in Bath Springs, Tennessee, passed away at his home in Charleston, West Virginia, on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Sonja Wallace, and brother, Nile Riley.

The middle child of Brown and Marjorie Riley, Joe grew up in Brooklyn, West Virginia, and graduated from Fayetteville High School and Morris Harvey College.  He served his country as an Airman First Class in the United States Air Force after the Korean conflict.

After college, he began a long career with the West Virginia Department of Highways, rising to serve as Director of the Right of Ways Division until his retirement. A devoted husband and man of faith, Joe was married to Martha Sue Riley of Charleston for more than 62 years and was a faithful member of the Church of Christ, serving as an elder for over 40 years.

Joe is survived by his wife, Martha Sue; his sons, Brian (Bobbi) Riley of Memphis, Tennessee, and Mike (Denise) Riley of Charleston; four granddaughters, Alexis (Slade) Riley-Billew, Amelia (Sebastion) Riley-de la Cruz, Addison Riley, and Sarah Riley, and one great-granddaughter, Maeven Riley de la Cruz.

Known for his steady character, quiet leadership, and love of family, Joe enjoyed competing in his weekly golf league and treasured every moment spent watching his grandchildren grow.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon on Monday, April 13, 2026, in the Chapel of Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home, with Minister Matthew Derreberry officiating the service.

Joseph will be laid to rest at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill, West Virginia.

Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.

    My husband and I had the honor of meeting Joe and Sue when they started attending the Belle Church of Christ.
    He was a gentle and caring person and Sue is a sweetheart. We will miss them and please let us know if we can do anything for you guys.
