Charleston, WV

Judith Kay “Judy” Hopkins, 80, of Charleston, WV, passed away peacefully at her home on June 7, 2024. She was born on August 3, 1943.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents Earl and Mabel Richardson, sister Barbara Snyder, brothers Gary and Johnny Richardson, and niece Kimberly Snyder.

Judith is survived by her daughter Rebecca Norman (Tommy), daughter Kellie Williams (Wes), son Ronald “Chad” Hopkins (Rachel) and granddaughter Ella Hopkins, nephew Danny Snyder (Carla), great nieces Sarah and Kaley, and great-great niece Mia, nephew Trey Snyder (Anna), nephew Timothy Richardson (Berry), niece Lula and nephew Elroy, cousins Suzie Strassburger and Regina Allen.

Judy is also survived by her best friend Charlene Bailes who regarded Judy as her second mother, her very close friends/extended family Pat Cochran, Karl Ellison and Krista Goins. Judy cherished her time with each of them & they spent many wonderful days together on her porch.

Judy graduated from Shady Spring High School in Shady Spring, WV. After graduation she lived a life marked by professions focused on assisting others. Her generosity was instrumental in not only choosing her path, but also her career success. Judy worked in the financial sector for years, then joined FEMA to pursue a passion for assisting those in need. She worked in FEMA Field Disaster Recovery Centers, until retiring, coordinating assistance for those impacted by federally declared disaster areas. Judy enjoyed her travels with FEMA throughout the US and US Territories, meeting and working with the people in those areas and cherished the long-term friendships she maintained with many of her FEMA colleagues.

Judy loved walking on the beaches of Pensacola, Florida, where she spent a lot of time enjoying the abundant Sealife and picking up sea shells. Judy loved nature, blue grass music and always enjoyed a good camp fire. After retirement, she had a passion for feeding the deer and birds at her home so this became one of her favorite past times. Judy also loved working in her garden and watching the flowers grow throughout the summer.

The family is planning a celebration of life gathering on Judy’s birthday, August 3, 2024, with the location and time to be communicated at a later date.

Judy was a long-term contributor to her favorite charity, St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

It is the family’s request that anyone wishing to express their sympathy please do so by making a donation to St. Jude or to a charity of their choosing. A St. Jude memorial donation site has been established in memory of Judy and can be accessed at the site below.
