Obituary
Julia marie chaney mccormick, 92, of kanawha city, passed away thursday, july 9, 2015 at her home.
She was born on august 17, 1922 to the late walter p. Chaney and elizabeth a. Traylor. Julia was raised on a dairy farm in smyrna, tn, schooled in nashville, tn and graduated from draughon business college, nashville, tn.
She worked in personnel for the federal government civil service during world war ii at smyrna air force base, smyrna, tn and later worked for the national life and accidental insurance company, nashville, tn.
Julia came to charleston in 1948 and worked in the payroll office of libby owens ford glass company.
Soon after, julia along with her husband, the late richard (mac) mccormick and his brothers started mccormick jewelers. She was a co-owner and an integral part of the business, managing the accounting department until her retirement.
She had a lifelong love of ballroom dancing. This included her participation in ballroom dancing competitions, as well as, her membership in local dance clubs. Those clubs included the cotillion club, quadrille club, academy club, passepied club, latin club and the university club. She was also instrumental in establishing ray’s ballroom studio and gave instruction at the greenbrier, the university of charleston and stonewall resort.
In addition to her parents, julia was preceded in death by her husband, james richard mccormick; brother, charles a. Chaney; and sister, nelle chaney palmer.
She is survived by her brother-in-law, john e. Mccormick of charleston; nieces, theresa m. Rabel of washington, d.C. And patricia mccormick of charleston; cousins, mary emma barker of chattanooga, tn and barbara traylor young of columbus, oh.
Funeral service will be 11 a.M. Wednesday, july 15, 2015 at barlow bonsall funeral home, charleston with monsignor p. Edward sadie officiating. Burial will follow at sunset memorial park, south charleston. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.M. On tuesday, july 14, 2015 also at the funeral home.

I am so very saddened to learn of Julia’s passing. I always enjoyed dancing with her at the various dances. She was an extremely classy lady and always so gentle and kind. I will greatly miss her.

I Was Saddened To Hear The News About Julia. She And Craig Taught Me A Lot Of What I Know About Dancing In Group And Private Lessons. She Was Such A Classy Lady Who Always Carried Herself With Pride And Dignity. I Will Miss Seeing Her At Dances, And Her Death Is A Loss To The Dance Community.
