Obituary
June Ellen Hunt Price Walker, 78, passed away on Friday, December 27, 2024, at the Arthur B. Hodges Center in Charleston, WV, after a long battle with dementia/Alzheimer’s Disease.
June was born on April 29, 1946, in Huntington, WV, to James Frederick and Ruth Christian Hunt.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, the Rev. John F. Price of Charleston; her sister, Carol Hunt Pierce and her husband, Joe, of Chicago, IL, and her brother, J. Patrick (Pat) Hunt and his wife, Patty, of Claremont, NC.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Richard B. Walker, her sons, David (wife Angie, children John, Marshall, Hunter, James), Doug (wife Annie, son Gabe, stepchildren Lafe, Alaina, Luke), and Greg (wife Michel, children Sophia, Sean), stepsons, Mike (wife Beth, daughter Jennifer), Pat (wife Beth, children Katherine, Francis and Lewis) and stepdaughter Caroline (husband Wayne), as well as special niece, Kristen Hunt of Harrisburg, NC, and her life-long best friend, Nausha Coury Campbell of Huntington WV.
During her rich and evolving spiritual life, June was a Methodist, an Episcopalian and a Catholic. She was a member of Highlawn United Methodist Church in Huntington; Christ Church United Methodist in Charleston; St. John’s Episcopal Church in Charleston, where she sang in the St. Ambrose Choir; and the Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, where she sang in the Cathedral Choir.
After graduating from Huntington East High School, June attended Marshall University and Wheeling College, earning a B.A. degree in English from Marshall University in 1969- She was always eager to say she was a 3rd generation Marshall graduate. She was a wife, mother and homemaker, and was very involved in the movement to promote natural childbirth and breastfeeding as a member of the Childbirth Education Association (CEA) and a founder of La Leche League of WV. She continued her education by earning a B.S. degree in Nursing from the University of Charleston in 1985. June worked for more than 25 years at CAMC, where she served as the Secretary of the Education Committee and retired as the Clinical Coordinator of the Medical Rehabilitation Unit (2-South). She was always very proud of her career at CAMC.
In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, traveling, antiquing, reading, arts and crafts, and spending time with family and friends. Music was always a part of June’s life. Her choir participation was previously mentioned, but she particularly enjoyed Classical and Jazz music (Bob Thompson, Herb Alpert and Kenny G), with occasional dabbling into characters such as Willie Nelson and James Taylor. She also enjoyed ballroom dancing and was a member of the Cotillion Club (Huntington), the Latin Club (Charleston) and the University Club (Charleston). It’s debatable as to whether she initially enjoyed cooking but, as a mother to three boys with voracious appetites, she had to evolve and became a great cook. She also loved her pets, particularly the final two cats with whom she shared a home, “Shadow” and “Oreo.”
June’s family would like to thank those who provided home health care for several years before skilled nursing became a necessity. Companies that provided in-home care were Visiting Angels (special thanks to Jackie, Mindy, Delia) and A Special Touch Home Care (special thanks to Cheryl). The family would like to thank the nurses, aides and staff at the Arthur B. Hodges Center at Edgewood Summit for their attentive, and personal, care for June. Her special time at the Hodges Center will not be forgotten. June’s children would like to recognize the efforts of all who cared for June, especially her husband, Richard B. “Dick” Walker, who helped her to maintain her independence and dignity for as long as possible while fighting her disease. We know how much he loved her.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 25, 2025, at the Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Charleston, with the Very Rev. Fr. Donald X. Higgs officiating. June’s ashes will be entombed at St. John’s Episcopal Church Columbarium at a later date.
Visitation will begin one hour prior at the church.
