Obituary

Kathleen peel anderson, 94, passed away, sunday may 17, 2015 at the arthur b. Hodges center with her daughters at her side. Kathleen was a loving daughter,devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.

Faithful to her church, caring of her family, diligent in her career, and thoughtful of her friends, she lived a full and purposeful life.  she was born in wheeling, wv, onjune 2, 1920, the fourth and youngest daughter of william h. And ella murtaugh peel. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her sisters mildred p. Mccracken, margaret p. Hughes, gertrude p. Peel and her only niece, marlene mccracken.  b. Peyton anderson, jr., her beloved husband of 62 years, died on november 10, 2005.

She is survived by her daughters deborah anderson faber and husband the honorable david a. Faber of bluefield,wv, and elizabeth anderson truter and husband douglas ward truter of pittsburgh, pa and naples, fl. Additionally, she is survived by her three grand daughters: katherine peyton tombillo and husband matthew of wesley chapel,fl; logan truter sheehan and husband edward of boston, ma; and morgan truter forte and husband robert of pittsburgh, pa. Two great-grandchildren: addison woodward forte and alexander peyton tombillo.

Kathleen grew up in the wheeling area, attended local parochial schools and graduated from st. Joseph’s academyin wheeling in 1938.  she attended west virginia university where she earned a b.S. Degree in biological science and english, graduating in 1942. At wvu she was a member of pi beta phi sorority, served on the executive committee of newman hall, and numerous campus organizations.

After graduation, she taughtfor a year at moundsville high school.On july 10, 1943, she and 1st lt.Bernard peyton anderson, jr. Were married in laredo, texas, where he wasstationed as a flight instructor for the army air corps, later the unitedstates air force. In 1945 at the end of wwii, they returned to charleston, wv,where they lived and raised their family.

Kathleen was a retired kanawha county school teacher with 34 years of service. from 1952 until 1982 shetaught science at horace mann junior high school in kanawha city.  many of her former students credited her with encouraging and inspiring them to pursue careers in science, medicine and education.

She was a 65 year member of st. Agnes catholic church. In september, 1975, she was the first women installed as a eucharistic minister of the wheeling-charleston diocese by the then rev. Edward p. Sadie. She served as a eucharistic minister of the sick and provided communion to hospital patients and shut-ins. Kathleen was a member of st. Agnes garden club and the church’s comfort committee.

Kathleen was a life member of thenational education association, west virginia education association, and a former volunteer at memorial division of camc and sunrise museum. She belonged to quadrille club, grandparents club, the emeritus club of west virginia university, west virginia auxiliary of the congregation of st. Joseph, and was a former member of edgewood country club.

In recent years macular degeneration diminished her ability to pursue her love of reading, but she persevered and continued to follow her interests in sports, art, antiques, and music, and routinely won against her sons-in-law in family bridge games.

After her husband’s death, she chose to remain in their home, surrounded with a lifetime of memories. She was able to retain her independence with the care and loving assistance of louann stover atkins. Kindness and concern of her friends and neighbors, especially monica k.Schwartz and her family helped her maintain church and social ties.

She enjoyed calls and visits from friends and family during her fifteen month residency at hodges. Spiritual comfort and concern were provided by her church friendsmaggie winski, pat fulcher, ann weimer, therese cox and the schwartz family.The family gratefully acknowledges the care and support she received from the staff during her time at arthur b.Hodges center.

Kathleen developed warm personal relationships and bonds with her special caregivers on the nursing staff. In recent months the family has additionally relied on the skilled professional care of her hospice team that provided guidance, comfort and compassion.

A mass of christian burial will be 11 a.M. Thursday, may 21, 2015 at st. Agnes catholic church in kanawha city with monsignor p. Edward sadie and father joseph augustine officiating.  entombment will follow at sunset memorial park mausoleum, south charleston.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.M. Wednesday,may 20, 2015 at barlow bonsall funeral home, charleston. A reception and celebration of kathleen’s life will be held at 2 p.M. Thursday, may 21, 2015 at the erma byrd art gallery at the university of charleston.
