Obituary
Margaret “peg” hutchinson wilson, 86, of charleston, wv, passed away on april 8, 2018 at camc memorial division, charleston, wv. Born august 26, 1931 in augusta, maine, peg was the oldest child and only daughter of flora and carl hutchinson.
Peg grew up in augusta, maine and spent her summers on the maine coast in chamberlain at the cottage built by her father. Peg continued her formal education at skidmore college, saratoga springs, ny (ba) and university of michigan, ann arbor, mi (ma). she supported the family by teaching middle school while her husband attended medical school and residency.
Mother of five, peg’s greatest joy was her children. she arrived in charleston in 1962 with three young children and one on the way. Music was a constant in the house. The afternoon routine for her young children consisted of singing songs at the piano and story time snuggles. In later years, peg finished prepping dinner early so she could sneak in an hour on the piano before sitting down at the table.
her artistic flair was always on display in music, on canvas and in her gardens. Her home was filled with many of her own paintings and often an easel with her latest acrylic or watercolor project.
Peg thoroughly enjoyed gardening, graduating from the first class of master gardeners in charleston and transforming a yard full of briars into a beautiful oasis. Her children often returned to their homes with a division of the many plants she had cultivated.
Her travels were far and wide, from a two month long family trip to scandinavia with five children, her parents and her mother in law, to later years when she took frequent trips to china when her husband, tom wilson, whom she married in 1980, traveled as a consultant in the field of heterogeneous catalysis.
And always, trips back to her beloved maine. As her family grew and scattered, peg determined to keep maine in their lives and accomplished this by hosting a biannual summer gathering of her tribe in maine for many years, introducing yet another generation to the charms of lobster, rocky coasts and freezing cold water.
In addition to music, painting, gardening and travel, peg enjoyed needlepoint, tennis, bridge and a challenging crossword puzzle. she was a member of allied artists, briar hills garden club and saint matthews episcopal church.
Peg is survived by her brothers bob hutchinson (carol) of westport island, me and bill hutchinson of charleston; and by her children: andy goodwin (carolyn) of littleton, co, tori hardy (waller) of charleston, beth gallagher (tony) of narberth, pa, mark goodwin (sean) of palm desert and san francisco, ca and martha jennings of glen allen, va; seven grandchildren: greyson goodwin, collin goodwin, meg hardy abraham (matt), kaitlin hardy jonas (kyle), patrick hardy, austin jennings and emma jennings; and two great grandchildren, hazel and otis abraham.
