Mawmaw was a phenomenal woman and a tremendous inspiration. She carried herself with confidence and did what she believed was right, regardless of anyone else’s thoughts.
During my four years at WVWC, she was a constant source support of love and care. Mawmaw stored Little Joey, my beloved Subaru, every summer when I was back in AZ, and ensured my dorm room furniture and supplies were safely stored at her home.
Every fall and spring mawmaw helped me move in/out of my dorm recruiting my cousin and grandpa to support me. I won’t forget the first parents weekend at WVWC. I was so bummed I would only have my grandparents there. I adored them, but I was so homesick and missed my parents. Mawmaw surprised me by pulling up in her red Subaru with my dad, which was the best gift she could have given me. I loved showing him around my school, and sharing with him the campus I called home.
Mawmaw ensured she was at my wedding, a truly meaningful moment in my life. She also ensured she came to visit me shortly after the birth of each of my boys, helping me around the house and getting valuable 1-1 time with them. After travel opened up a bit in 2022, my husband and I prioritized seeing our remaining living grandparents meaning we made trips out to WV in October 2022 and October 2023. I even got the chance to come out by myself in February 2023 to support her after my step-grandpa’s surgery. It was during those trips she gave me advice that resonates with me today, and I owe so much of my happiness now to her honesty and wisdom.
The love and support of my mawmaw is something I will never forget. Recently, I was talking with my boys about how although it’s sad we’re losing her now, they will be grateful for knowing her when they’re older. They assured me they’re already grateful to know their mawmaw and the role she’s played in their lives.
I love my mawmaw so much and I’m so happy she went on her own terms getting the opportunity to see all her grandkids as well as those she claims as her grandkids. She was a phenomenal woman and a consistent source of guidance and love.
