Obituary
Marlene Price, 88, of Charleston, WV, passed away July 29, 2025, after a long battle with dementia. Marlene was born February 5, 1937, to Hartwell and Helen Burgroff in Charleston.
Marlene is a lifelong resident of Charleston, with living in Gulf Breeze, FL, for a time in the mid ‘80s. She was a 1954 graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School. She was a lifelong member of The Salvation Army. She was a girl guard and, at just 17, she was chosen to attend an international girl guard camp in Oslo, Norway. She was extremely proud of this.
Marlene worked for the Charleston Credit Bureau in her early years, also working for The Salvation Army and St. Francis Hospital, where she was a big contributor with their Charleston children’s plays and parties, once being featured on the front page of the paper making all the costumes for the play, at least 10 costumes. She was blessed with many talents, being a seamstress was just one, she was also a very talented painter having many pictures hanging in the family home still.
In the ‘90s, she decided to enroll at Marshall University, she graduated in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in graphic art and design, winning many awards for her works of art and woven tapestries. She learned to dye her own wool for these.
Marlene was an enormous Marshall football fan. She loved THE HERD! Each year, she would print and design her own sweatshirt for that year’s games. She would also write an encouragement letter to the team and signed it ‘your fan in the stands.”
Marlene went back to work at the Salvation Army as their secretary and bookkeeper. She was also honored with being chosen as the Corp Sergeant major, a position she took seriously and proud of. Once again she took the role of costume maker for many plays at the church. She was also a member of their women’s home league.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hartwell and Helen Burgroff; brothers, Charles and Larry Burgroff, Robert “Woody” Price.
Marlene is survived by her children, Robert “Mickey” Price, Edward Price, William Price and Lisa Strazzula (Rich); brothers, Robert Burgroff (Patty), Steven Burgroff (Linda); sister, Karen Norman, Dixie Mitchell( Scott); sister-in-law, Sheri Burgroff; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, August 1, 2025, at the Salvation Army Church, 301 Mary Street, Charleston, with Capt. Paladino officiating.
Visitation will begin one hour prior at the church.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www.barlowbonsall.com .
