Obituary
Marvin r. Barker, jr. Was born on march 14, 1947 and passed away at 71 years of age on september 29, 2018. He was the first son to marvin ray barker and bernice barker, born in charleston, west virginia, grew up in the city and graduated from charleston high school.
Joe enlisted in the us air force after high school and was sent overseas to support efforts in southeast asia. He came back to charleston where he went to morris harvey and graduated with a degree in political science. He later graduated from university of charleston with a degree in computer programming.
Joe met linda farley while delivering newspapers in marmet, wv, during his studies at morris harvey. They married and have 3 children.
Joe was known around charleston and the state of west virginia for many years as an area chess champion, winning numerous chess tournaments over a number of decades. He was an active member in the charleston chess club and enjoyed reading and studying chess in his spare time.
He is survived by his wife, linda, of charleston; and his three children, melanie barker earehart of martinsburg, wv, robert a. Barker of charleston, and james b. Barker of huntington. He is also survived by his brother, robert f. Barker of cary, nc.; and grandchildren, trey, emily, and drew earehart and alexander barker.
Visitation will be held friday, october 5, 2018 at 1pm at barlow bonsall funeral home. Funeral service to follow at 2pm with pastor darick biondi officiating.

I Just Learn Of Joe Passing Today, December 21. I Played Chess With Joe Over The Years. I First Met Joe In 1963 After Winning The West Virginia Junior Chess Champion Trophy. Joe And Another Player Were Co-Champions With Me But I Got The Trophy On Tie-Break Points. Joe Wanted To Play Me For The Trophy And Title After The Tournament! I Always Enjoyed Being Around Joe. Nancy And I Were Saddened To Learn Of The Recent Passing Of Your Husband And Father.
As Linda Knows, I Had Known Joe For Many Years Prior To His Passing. I Was Constantly Amazed At The Variety Of His Interests And His Accomplishments Even Though They Were Often No More Than Hobbies, As Opposed To Vocations.
In Addition, I Had Often €Œthreatened€ Your Father With Mayhem In The Event He Did Not Take Good Care Of Linda, One Of The Nicest People I Have Ever Had The Opportunity To Know During My Lifetime.
